Cold Air Intake Owners
Cold Air Intake Owners
I have an INJEN cai but I'm sure this applies to those with placeracing and all others as well. I'm wondering if you have changed your filter, and if so, how often you change it. What is the proper procedure?
I've had my injen ever since it first came out about 3 years ago and have not touched it since... does it not require the same type of filter replacement maintenance the way our stock maxima intake filters do?
Thanks in advance -

The Injen is the worst intake you can possibly put on a 4th gen Maxima.
The performance loss it has, especially in the summer is just unreal.
Worst mod ever award goes to the 4th gen Injen intake.... HANDS DOWN!
wow thanks njmaxseltd, way to help a brotha out in a time of need -
does anyone know if i can take just the filter off to do this maintenance without having to take my whole intake out? sorry if i sound clueless but i did not do the original install myself and have no idea where to even start (disassembly instructions would be perfect!)

This is based on my experience.......
If you are going to modify just the intake and expect gains, then you're just wasting your time. Although it might seem like many have gotten gains, its most likely just due to placebo effect.
However, if you are going to open up your exhaust as well and go with a header or y/b pipe, hi/flow cat and muffler then you will see a collective gain by having a free flowing intake.
Up until last weekend, I have tried different intake setups, HAI/modified stock/CAI. The gains weren't realized until I modified my exhaust system. Acceleration is way better, good gains throughout the power band. My next mod is an 00vi and TS ECU.

i will say that i just went from an injen to a jwt hybrid and even though the sound isn't as nice, i am happy with the new throttle response of the short ram hybrid set up. i thought this set up was gonna run worse than the injen being that the nearest outside air source is now even further away from the inlet, but it's definitely an improvement.
as far as the injen being right behind the radiator, you're absolutely right. however, the air that flows through the radiator flows through the radiator fan shroud which the injen is a few inches away from (to the left to be exact). so you really aren't getting hot air directly from the radiator. also, if you remove the left hand lower splash guard and add an injen heat shield the injens performance and throttle response is much improved. if you have an injen, be innovative, get creative, and make it work...

I'm sure you can figure it out once you take a look at it. Intakes are pretty easy to figure out, unless you're completely clueless.
PS: Modified OEM intake FTW.
i just put the injen CAI on, and i did notice some power loss in the lower rpms, maybe, but the gains on the upper end were noticable. I have a stock exhaust. And I'd either work under the car, or just take the whole piece out from the bend down. You can probably clean the filter w/that aluminum piece still on it, I don't see why not. Then just replace the piece and be done with it. Now as far as removing that splash guard from below, mine's starting to fall off and I know it's going to get worse. I was going to fix it, but you recommend ripping it off? I don't think that's wise, what about water? I mean I'm not going to drive thru 4ft deep water, but wouldn't water get in there easily w/o that splash guard there? Thanks.
i live in the desert so water isn't much of an issue here. as far as rocks, i wouldn't be too concerned as i have hit rabits with the heat shield/filter and no problems other than the obvious mess. if your worried about little stuff like that, i would stay w/ the stock set up. any after market set up is gonna have some type of reliabilty risk involved.

Heh.. never thought someone would ask for a write up on how to remove a cone filter... Its probably the simplest thing to do. You might not even need a wrench if all thats holding on the filter to the piping is a clamp. But I never seen injen dunno how they are, my cai filter is held on by a clamp. All i need is a scewdriver to get it off.
To clean the filter use the recharge kit, link to that already given in the 2nd post.

yea recharge kit, and the ONLY reason i suggest taking off a tiny bit of intake piping is it's almost impossible to get right at the intake element w/o going underneath the car. as far as the placebo effect, i don't know man... i mean i'm not saying you're wrong but how could giving my car better air flow be bad? at all? i don't get it. i haven't been stock in a while, so i don't really have a comparison. either way, i'm planning on doing exhaust in a little while. and i think that if you give me oxygen while i'm sitting at my computer, this will make me breathe better... i'm just not using it by being active.
Injen sucks indeed.... fender CAI FTW! I still dont believe that stock is the best. Next time im at the track im gonne run my car both with the current CAI, then again with stock intake. Gotte prove myself wrong cause otherwise I will never believe that stock is best.

it doesnt matter if theres more air flow if the air is hot

oh i meant the place racing intake style... i just call it a fender cause well the filter is in the fender, but I got mine off ebay for like 20 bucks. Then i used the JWT pop charger filter from my short ram intake I had previously (which sucked). Its the one where u have to cut a hole in the inner fender next to the battery.

Thats like pretty much what I bought just throw on a k&n cone instead of that cheap filter they give you.

so do hybrids also suck? hybrids ingest hot air also, and yes you do take a hit in the low end, but you do make power mid range and up. this low end power loss really only affects automatics. how many of you 5 speed owners drive hard below 3000rpm? why floor it below 3000 rpm when your only a shift away from your power band.

i have a five speed and i have a Bomz mid-pipe and a JWT pop charger and it's definitely the better set up versus the injen, yet this design with out question only sucks in hot air. the injen did have better low end but i don't drive hard in the low end so who gives a ****.

Nothing ghetto about this DIY intake mod. This is not a Bombz intake, it is made out of 3" aluminized pipe, the bends are less than 90 degrees for better air flow as air don't like to turn around corners.

BTW, I just added an AEM by-pass valve a week after the photos were taken.

i wanted to do the hole in the fender well, but i was too scared to cut into my fender. so is the air that the injen intake that much hotter than what's being pulled in from the stock intake? i would hope that even with it being by the radiator, the air would be cooler from the bottom of the engine than the top. i don't know, i guess the only way to tell would be having a dyno comparison and see where the loss/gain is. i can't believe there is a complete loss of power with the injen. albiet there are better intakes, i hope that this is better than stock. i'd love to see a dyno comparison of the two.

I was the same way about cutting a hole in my fender... but its so easy with a hole saw. Cuts a perfect round hole, just make sure u are cutting it in the right place. I cut mine just a tad off, but it still works just fine.
