help, my car sounds ricey as F***

so i got my warpspeed y pipe installed yesterday, i love it i can feel a power difference. the only other exhaust mod i have is a cheap coffee can muffler from ebay, that is just welded on the end of my exhaust instead of a stock muffler. everything else of my exhaust is stock except the y pipe and muffler. my car sounds all raspy and **** now, and its pissing me off. it sounds ricey. what kind of muffler should i buy that will solve this problem??? i am looking at a Magnaflow SS, that is probably my best bet, but i want opinions on what will sound good. thanks.

Your gonna get that raspy sound because most likely is a Straight Through muffler that you purchased beacuse alt of the cheap ones are straight through. Get a Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler. www.A-1Performance.com talk to Fred.

I have the same issues only I also got a high/flo cat and custom B pipe with the y-pipe. Before everything was installed, my Flowmaster sounded perfect. Not too loud, a little droning but its all good. As soon as I installed the Y/B pipes and cat, the muffler got 3x louder! Only thing I can tell you is to get a better muffler. The Flowmaster has chambers inside w/o any sound suppression material in it. Therefore, once you open up your exhaust the added flow of exhaust gases down to the muffler and out is stronger thus making the muffler louder. The Magnaflow is straight thru but has these sound suppressing material inside that should quiet things down a bit. If you want it to be more quietter, get the Dynomax Super Turbo. It's probably the most quiet universal muffler. However, it has this 3 pass chamber that is pretty much almost like your stock muffler plus it has sound suppressing material inside. I'm not sure if that would result to any kind of performance loss. I was going to get the Dynomax but I decided to get the Magnaflow Street Series instead for performance's sake. It won't be as loud as my Flowmaster for sure.

I have a Borla Pro XS sitting in my room right now, waiting to be installed next week. From all the sound clips I've heard, it sounds good no matter what the rest of your setup is. It's not cheap, though, and doesn't even come with a tip.

I heard Borlas are really nice. Not a common set-up for Maximas but my friend has it in his Diamante and it sounds really nice. Very quite but roars at WOT. If I had the funds I would really like to take a G35 sedan muffler and have it fitted to the Max. That would really sound nice. BTW the G35 sedan muffler is different from the coupe as the coupe has a dual exit setup.

greddy sp2 or cattman
id love an SP2 but i dont have that kind of money, same with the cattman. ill get a magnaflow, it should still be loud but not as ricey as my damn pos ebay muffler.

btw, i like loud, just not ricey loud, so i think the magnaflow should be perfect for me.

I'm getting it installed tomorrow morning. Then I gotta go get the car dyno'd by 11am. I'll be video taping the dyno and possibly the drive to the dyno place to give everyone a good idea on how the car sounds while driving it. I'm gonna see if I can get some drive-by shots too.

Mine sounds raspy too... and I cannot fix it. I have a warpspeed y-pipe, universal/highflow cat and a STOCK muffler. I once removed the resonator, but the raspyness was HORRIBLE. So I reinstalled one a little smaller in diameter. I would say a stock muffler and maybe a large (26"x6") resonator. Mine is only 4" around. Plus I think my catalytic converter is creating the same problem your muffler is. Does anyone know why our engine sounds raspy when the vq35's do not. What is so different about their exhaust? The vq30 and the vq35 is the same 'design', just displacement (maybe a difference in cam size too). But the point is its designed the same so why does our engine sound raspy?

I have the magnaflow street series and mine is raspy...but I also have my resonator removed in addition to my y pipe. It sounded really nice even without the resonator until I replaced the y pipe. I think the unequal length might play a part in the raspiness.

It's not the engine.......

It's the increased flow of exhaust gases after the y-pipe and new cat is installed. Such increase produces more exhaust noise. If you want things to be quiet just like stock, put the stock exhaust back on.

The same principle applies with intakes. Make it a high flowing intake and the intake noise increases. A good example is hacking your stock airbox. More air flows in thus more noise.

go with the dynomax turbo or maybe even get one of those thrush mufflers. those mufflers DO provide better flow than stock, youll feel your engine RESPOND better(not exactly power) and youll have a nice little growl when you go WOT. not rice, not raspy, but a nice not too exagerated growl.

good luck
god bless

I'd like to also add that once you start modding the exhaust system, your car won't sound the same no more. Mine doesn't even sound close to the way it used to. Mine idles with the same exhaust note as a V8, low grumble sound. Even if you get those expensive exhaust set-ups, the car will never sound the same and you will hear certain sounds that was never there before. The raspiness is mainly as a result of the Y-pipe opening things up for exhaust flow, nothing you can do to change that. Like I said before, you want your car to sound stock, then don't mess with the stock exhaust system.

As for raspiness, even the G35 coupe or the 350z exhaust sounds a bit raspy at WOT.

The aftermarket y pipes are unequal length and remove precats. This affects the sound in many ways. The lengths change the firing order pluses and the deleted cats add noise. The tubing is also thinner and doesnt insulate as well. Even with my stock cat back it sounds like azz because of the Ponitac drone from the aftermarket y pipe.

I love the sound of the stock y pipe, and the sound of equal length headers is even better.

You need to put a resonator in there to lower the sound.

I'm very happy with the sound, I'm done with the exhaust now.

Bastard.

A friend of mine has a Borla muffler on his car. He has a supercharger with 3" catback and the whole 9 yards though. IMO it sounds terrible. Ridiculously loud and really really farty.

But that is a total different setup from the usual 2.25 or 2.5" catbacks so it may sound better.

I have a SP2. I haven't heard it outside the car yet. I'm guessing its fairly farty . One day some headers will change that.

i like the way it sounds, DR-Max, what magnaflow muffler did you order? it looks like the single wall tip type, im gonna order the one with a 7 inch long dual wall tip, because the dual wall tip reduces the sound even a little more.

I got the Single Wall, Angle Cut, part# 14827. The sound from the camera doesn't do it justice. I love listening to my exhaust sound now, I keep the radio volume low so that I can hear my exhaust when I go WOT. The sound is subtle at lower RPM's but growls up at the top at around 3500 rpms and above under load.

The custom B-pipe is 2.5" in diameter, the resonator is Magnaflow. I'm sure that there are other brands of resonators out there that might be quietter than the Magnaflow.
