Question about Ball Joints?

I just need to know how to tell if the ball joints are bad? I am getting ready to change my struts and springs and I need to know if I should replace the LCA while I am doing the work. My max has about 168,000 mi. on it in case that helps.

lift the car and try shaking both front wheels with your hands. There should be no freeplay.
