WTF!!!?!?!?? Debadging=Huge find

Okay so I'm debadging the rear of my Max and what do I find? That the entire trunk is originally black instead of pearl white. And before you ask no all the gunk/goo is gone. This thing is actually black. I scratched an otherwise unseen part of the trunk lid and yep black. So now I'm curious, so I'm pulling parts to see how far this car has been reconstructed. Nevermind that I did a carfax, which I know isn't 100%, but it came back negative for any damage. So in my exploration I find frt bumper repainted(not even OEM), Rear bumper repainted(overspray on metal parts), Lt frt panel, Rt rear panel, both rear doors have been bondo'ed.

You know what's funny is that I can't say that its a cheap paint job. I've seen cheap Maaco & Econo paint jobs, hell I've had cars painted by them in the past. This is a pretty good job. It definately fooled me.

My lower running light (near the turn signal) went out a few months ago. I bought a new bulb and when I when to replace it the damn orange reflector thing just fell out. Someone had glued the ***** on with sealent.

So I checked out the bumper and it was cracked slightly around the light and I noticed my windshield washer resevior had a gaint crack in the top of it.

I ended up replacing the orange with clears and getting a new washer res. with the cold spec. However, like you I wonder what else is lurking around.

The worst thing is when you're polishing it and just behind the sun roof you find this strange bump, it looks ok but it feels like there's a seam there . . . and then you discover the seam runs all the way across the roof and down each side . . . so you jack it up and wow, there's a weld line running across the floor too, from one side to the other. And you realise your car was made from two different ones. Like a Caddy (ugh, vomit) that someone lent me to drive around in San Antonio.

What ever happen to honesty......

That is why when I go to the dealrships I view them as the enemy. I view them as trying to take money away from my kids and our family activities. If they are upfront with me I have no issues and behave very nicely, the problems arise when I notice that they are bull shi**ing me around.

hope ur car hasn't been in an accident... maybe the previous owner worked things out without letting the insurance companies know... which is why it came back negative...or... it could just be that he/she repaint the car...

These are the details that matter when buying a used car.

Sorry to hear about that, as long as she is in good mechanical shape you can always get a quality job done down the road.

Always take a little magnet with you when you're checking out a used car, guys. I have seen stuff you'd hardly believe. Sills rotted out completely, stuffed with old newspapers and plastered over with filler then painted. Whole panels of nothing except rust and fibreglass. Death traps driving around... thinking back, a long time ago in the UK I had an accident and the car I hit just fell apart in the road. Watch out. Don't buy used cars from the rust states! Try Texas, Arizona, etc.

Yep....those 1 day paint shops usually don't remove the badging when repainting a car. I debaged my car's trunk once and there laid the old paint. I painted the maxima emblem graphite and put it back on with 3m tape.

well when i bought mine, and i started learning about cars (was a complete noob) i realized that the two headlights were different, they were different brands and different color on the back part of them, also the grill was held up with some random screws, then i did rewire of corners and found that the bulbs were glued on lol. recently i put on a summit rpm switch for 00vi. and see a bunch of tape and splices on my ECU, so who knows wat my car went thru. used to be a lease car up in Maryland. i live in Miami. so i got ownd, but car is perfect, no rust or anything. and my engine bay is black. don kno if its supposed to be sage mist green like the outside lol.

No, not in the bay, but the 'screws' that hold it on and pieces of plastic. The way I found out about my doors, is i ws installing fatmat inside the door itself and found holes where they had been pulled and bondo oozing inside the door.

Yep, it should be the same as body color...they spray the cars before putting anything in (engine, trans, interior, etc). Someone had your car repainted at some point and didn't feel like spending the extreme prices that involve tearing everything down and spraying absolutely everything.

So wth? you didn't look in the engine bay to find that it was a different color? I mean its dirty and stuff but you should be able to tell black from white...

the engine bay is white. And yes I looked over the car pretty good, this was by no means my first purchase. Like I said whoever had this car either did the work them selves or had a friend who knew body work. The overspray is subtle and barely unnoticable, but nonetheless there.

Most shops anywhere don't strip the old paint off. There is no need to with modern fillers and paints. That really only happens with restorations and big money.

And alot of aftermarket replacement panels are black. Are you sure its not just that? Hard to believe someone repainted the whole car from black to white...

No, it doesnot appear the whole car. Then again I'm not going to scrach every corner to find out either. As far as I can tell trunk, front and rear bumpers. But what really got me are the doors being bondo'ed.

Are you sure you were at a dealership and not the junkyard?
