What you could do is go to the tire rack and see--the pattern I see is that the lower the aspect ratio, the wider the rim necessary. For example, a 235/50-17 can go on a 6.5" rim, but a 235/45-17 needs a 7.5 minimum, for an Avon Tech M550. Not sure if it varies by brand, but shouldn't. Then again, those are the minimums, and not optimum.

With rims so cheap nowadays, I would strongly urge people not to get a narrow rim and try to mount wide tires on them. Why not get an 8" rim with the correct offset? Why bother with 7"?

Check out the closeouts--I just ordered Shuk W21 18x8 for $119 ea, used to be $279. They weight 22.5 which is nice and are 2-pc. Now it turns out I don't need them but still they're not that expensive. Probably made in Korea is why they're cheap, but that's ok....

My favorite rim is the ASA that's licensed by BBS, they're like $219 which is too much for me...lots of Bimmer owners use them for their winter tires and rave about them.
