Extremely annoying interior sound!!!

Hey folks,

Lately i've noticed an intermittent 'tapping' type noise coming from inside the roof lining (not far back from the top of the windshield) ... I suspect it might even be the rear vision mirror bracket having a loose bolt (or 2?) .. pressing hard into the roof lining in this surrounding area re-produces the 'tap' noise almost every time..... when it decides it'll start to do it as you're driving (particularly over bumps) it gets EXTREMELY annoying! Yet other days you can be going over some pretty decent bumps, and it stays quiet... Grrrr!!!

The plastic shield thing thats covering the mount for the rear vision mirror, i've tried prying it off with a screw driver (carefully) but even with a fair bit of force there, she wont budge.. whats the secret to getting to the bolts behind it / tightening the rear vision mirror arm? I pray this is all thats needed to stop the tap tap tap...

Worst case scenario, this tapping noise is pissing me off so much, i'd be willing to pay a professional $500+ to pull away the front half of the interior roof panel to find out wtf is causing it... arrrrghghhh!!

sorry, perhaps i wasnt clear enough as to where this noise is happening...

the tap is coming from around the area where the "rear vision mirror" is, pushing firmly on the roof lining anywhere from a couple of inches back from the front windscreen, back to around 2 / 3 inches behind the rear vision mirror mount manually produces this tick/tap noise, so the 'offending area' is concentrated around the general vicinity of the rear vision mirror bracket.... also, if i grab the actual rear vision mirror arm and use a bit of pressure to move it up and down? i get the "tap tap tap tap tap" then as well!!

Which is why i suspect it may possibly be a loose rear vision mirror bracket, but cant get the plastic cover thingy off to check... wondering if anyone knows how..

the plastic cover doesn't come off.

including the arm and mount?? theres no bolts to tighten it or anything?

Hmmm... that doesnt sound promising.... something's obviously loose or out of place there.. but everything 'seems' perfectly intact...

If that car has an automatic climate control like the 300ZXs, The thermostat for that system is right up near the rear view mirror. There is a tiny fan up in the auto temp thermostat to circulate air through it. That fan has crappy little bearings that go out and it will rattle and tap and make all kinds of noises. My 300ZXTT makes a racket all the time. I just select another CD and turn it up.

nope, auto climate control has no components near the rear view mirror. There is a sunload sensor in the defrost vent up by the windshield, but that's the closet thing to the mirror.
