You can drain it & refill it if you want to buy a new car within the next few weeks.

Unless he changed it every 30k, its not even worth changing, because the tranny will break, happened to my sister's friend, and all the mechanics suggested me not to change mine, even people on the forum.

If I was you, just wait for the experienced guys to get on, which will take around 1 day at max, I'm pretty sure they know more than me, all I know is how to mash on the gas pedal.

Dude, we have a section of this forum titled "fluids and lubricants" =). You'll probably get better responses there.. But anyway, seeing as how I'm ranting I figure I'll add my 2 cents.

After doing a crapload of reading I decided to use Mobil ATF Dexron III, IIRC it was rated highly by blackstone labs and recommended by the oil guru himself bill99gxe, who I haven't seen posted in awhile. Anyway, read up on the forums for more thorough recommendations. If you want to go synthetic it'll probably cost you 70-80 dollars for a case of 12qts. Mobil 1 ATF and Amsoil were rated amongst the best. Talkinghorse regularly hooks up the org's members and has been doing it for quite sometime.

In regards to whether or not it'll screw your tranny, 70k seems like it'll be fine, but it all depends on how it was driven in that 70k miles. Pull out the dipstick and check the color of the fluid, if it's nice and pink then you'll probably be fine. Oh and also, smell it, if it smells burnt, you've got some bigger problems on your hands then worrying about good ATF to put in. Hope some of this helped.

i changed my ATF at 112,000 miles (180,000km) with absoluetly no problem, right now im at 120,000 miles (191,000kms) and my maxima has never shifted smoother and faster. It downshifts alot faster then it use to. I have had no problems with my tranny, my 1-2 shift is butter smooth, along with the 2-3, 3-4. I dont think the previous owner ever changed the ATF either, as he didnt even change the engine oil. I work at nissan, and we do a lot of ATF flushes and stuff and ive never had any people bring theres back because of problems.

I changed mine (100% flush) at 110K. My daughter is driving it now and it's in the high 170s. Still shifts great. I did change it one more time (just the oil in the pan) at 140K or so. I used Penzoil Dextron III both times.

I always felt if changing the fluid makes it stop working, then you're buying a new tranny soon anyway.

Bought my 97 gle at 80k, let the fluid out(it was brown) and needed 5 quarts to fill back up. Did it again, this time the fluid was brown/red, put in 5 more quarts to fill up. No problems yet, shifts great. Will do the refill thing again one more time, then I will leave it alone till I get to 110k and start the refill deal again for three times.

I Changed Mine At 30,000 To Royal Purple And Had The System Completely Drained Of All Fluid (well The Machine Used Took The Old Fluid Out While The New Fluid Was Being Put In At The Same Time. Apparently It Is A Pressure Thing And The Fluid Must Be Put In At The Same Time It Is Taken Out) I Changed It Again At 90,000 And The Fluid Was Still A Purplish Color And It Shifts Great.
