trunk tension rod replacement

Anyone know how to put these back on? I think the FSM has a special tool but any help would be appreciated. Thanks. BTW, is there also anyway to adjust the spring up of the trunk (I am now spoilerless and the trunk seems to fly up fast). Thanks

good question about the 'spring-up-ness' of the trunk. My trunk doesn't spring up at all, i just hear the click and then have to lift it the whole way up. I have a spoiler, maybe the weight of it just keeps it down. Anyone know of a way to get it to pop up a bit on its own?

Mime springs up half way, I would like it to spring all the way open.

Wow, shows what I'm used too. I too have a spoiler...it doesn't come up at all just unlatches then i manually pull it up. Hell if there is a way to adjust or correct this let me know...I'll investigate myself when I have the time. I leave for Key West tommorrow for 2 weeks.

Chrome...I'm interested in the stillen RSB but as you can see do not have 15 posts or more to PM you with... I will soon though. E-mail your price if you please, maybe some photos of it's condition. Thanks.

If your Max came equipped with a spoiler, and then you remove it...then the trunk will fly up more. This is because the torsion bars will now have to be swapped out. You must replace it with the torsion bars that came with the Max's without the spoiler installed. The difference between the two is just what it is....torsion bars with spoiler (supports additional weight given on trunk with spoiler attached=soft closing of trunk; no hard slamming from additional weight put on trunk from spoiler) and torsion bars without spoiler (gives normal trunk weight without the added weight from spoiler=nomal, soft closing of trunk with just the trunk weight with no additional weight added to it, such as a spoiler). All Nissan spoiler kits come with replacement torsion bars because of the added weight to the trunk. So, I wouldn't find it possible if any adjustment would be helpful for the bars that you have in there. I would just try to swap for the other one that you need (maybe, at a local junkyard?) Good luck!

What about replacing them with some type of pneumatic shock?

As far as a tool I've always used long needle nose vise-crips. I don't belive there is a tool for it. BE VERY CARFUL, those things can f*** you up if your not.

There's a mod in the 4th gen forum for this, it uses a hood strut.

I'm not sure that the range of the shock allows it to open all of the way.

I'm pretty sure the trunk hinges are similar if not the same.

4th and 5th gen are similar and you can use replacement struts to do the same task.

Question

I had the spoiler put on by the stealer...and there was no mention of switching out the torsion bars.

I would love to find out how much and how hard they are to put in.

My trunk slams shut way too easy.

thanks

If you're replacing the old ones with new ones, just use a grinder or bolt cutter to snip these off. Getting the new ones on is a different story, and I don't have any info about that.

When i open the trunk it looks like theres tension in it. So if you snip it, I believe it will fly apart.

use a deep socket with an extension attached to it.

the socket goes over the end of the bar and you can apply tension to it.

I havn't actually checked the tension bar itself because I can't. The Maxipad is in the body shop .

So there are how many bolts holding the bar? And where?

i didnt see any bolts, but i didnt look. usually, theyre held in just by tension, sometimes a guide is in place.

As far as I remember I think there was a white piece on the middle of the bar that kinda holds it in place and there are 2 places on either end where the bar hooks around.

...So to the point - how do you remove it?

remove the bar with the loose end from the groove, at this point, the bar might snap out of place, so be careful.

the trunk also might fall, or drop slowly.

also note, ive done this on several cars, but not a maxima yet, so im basing this on non-specific experience.

good luck

Dose no one read anything I write, I'm an "out of work" nissan tech and have done this on several ocations installing spoilers on new cars. Lay in trunk, put leg up to keep trunk from slaming on your legs. Grap the end of the bar that dosent go into the hing w/ long needle nose vise grips and rotate it out of the mount. then do the same thing to the other bar. Don't cut them thy are under a good bit of tension so they would most likely fly out and hit you in the face.

basically what he said, except a deep socket and extension works much better than pliers.

and yes, they will fk you up, and so will the trunk if it falls on you.
