Do you use your handbrake?
Do you use your handbrake?
Im just wondering how many of you actually use your handbrake? I work at a dealership and i find that about 90% of the people there dont use it. I was always told to use it, so i do and i dont see why people dont? Is it to much of an inconvience to pull up on the handle or push an extra pedal in? I think myself and some of the mechanics do use the handbrake, the rest of them dont.
I use it everytime in every car I drive. While others don't. I rather keep pressure off the pin that holds the car while in "park". While this is an overkill since I am auto... I don't care.
Are you asking auto drivers or manual. I have a 5spd, so I use the hand break every time I stop.
When a friend parks his manual and doesn't leave it in gear or use the hand break, you can bet he'll find his car in the next row to where he parked it
.. what the.. I coulda swore I parked here...

When I used to own an auto I used it all the time. With my manual I use it all the time too.
My cousin told me that somebody forgot to use their handbrake in the college parking garage and the other car rolled into my cousin's car.

When I park on very stiff hills or when I'm in the car and the engine is running (I'm 5-speed)
I also pulled it once in my buddy's car when he was driving on a highway, in the middle of an 80 mph corner.

I use it all the time. Being a 5speed means that. but when I had the auto, I was always told to apply the hand brake while in neutral then take your foot of the brake. Let the car sit on the handbrake and put it in park.
You know that loud clunk when you take your car out of park on a hill. Even a slight one. Yeah thats bad.

Tell your cousin my bad...
I was guilty of this, however my car poped out of gear after I parked. Always use the e-brake since then.
I use mine all the time. It really helps in parking lots when it's snowy or rainy.
I've also used it a few times in normal driving to get a little extra rear bias when my front pads were worn and I was waiting for replacements. I've done the cop thing too... Don't have to any more though, since the Ksport coilovers prevent brake dive pretty well (shameless plug for stiff suspensions).
And of course I always use it when I park.

All those mathematically inclined, whats the percentile ratio thus far. I work nights and its near 5am. My brain is uncooperative right now. Anyways, I love my e-brake. My cable is broke on my 2nd gen and I witnessed it end up not where I parked it. 1st or reverse will slowly creep on steep hills. In my 00, its 2nd nature when I park.
This should have been a poll...
I use the e-brake religiously. Someone told me a convincing argument for using it when I was learning to drive (don't remember what it was..), so I have ever since. More habit now than anything, but it's just a good idea in general I think. Takes half a second to pull it up, so why not. Only problem with using it is that sometimes I forget to disengage it, or I won't disengage it fully.. I find mine slips a lot too.. so when I get out of the car, the car growns a lot because of the e-brake slipping.

i dont get it... the car will still move with the e-brake on....
why use it if your parked on a flat surface?
unless some people are affraid a theif will brake into there car and drive off with the e-brake on... hehehe yeah that will show them!

I used to do it engage the parking brake all the time in my 4th gen till the rear cable got messed up. I also worry that if I regularly engage it that I will warp the rear rotors after driving for a while. Right now, I don't ever use it.
