injen intake
injen intake
i have an 02 infiniti i35 with an 02-03 nissan maxima injen cold air intake. do you need a ecu reset when installing an intake. does anyone have an injen rd1940 intake. How does yours sound and performance wise did you gain anything. when i rev my car i don't hear anything from the intake is something wrong. the only time i hear the intake (i think)is when i stomp the gas pedal on the high way. can you fit 02-03 nissan maxima parts for an infiniti i35.
no, you don't. It will "learn" the intake.
performance - Injens do not give performance, just sound. They just suck in hot air from behind the radiator (probably even hotter than the OEM scoop/air box). The only time you'll hear it is at WOT, since the filter is way up at the front of the car and the i35 is better insulated than the Maxima.
If you want sound, get a "short ram" intake like a Berk
If you want actual performance, see if you can find a Place Racing REAL cold-air intake (good luck with that search since they're not made any more).
If you want a combination of sound and performance, do the GAB mod (look in the stickies FAQ/How-tos)....

On the Maxima, the Injen has the filter located directly behind the radiator. Guess where the hottest air in the engine bay is? Yup, directly behind the radiator...

The Injen is definitely the best LOOKING intake out there. It really blings up the engine bay. But the bottom line is that it is NOT a COLD air intake. It is a "warm air intake" (or even "hot air intake).
The ONLY true cold air intake ever made for the Maxima was the Place Racing CAI (and the Cattman-badged version of the PR CAI) - it required drilling a hole in the fender, and the filter sits just in front of the front left wheel, outside of the engine bay where it gets "fresh air" from the outside.
There are some "custom" cold-air setups as well, known as OSCAIs (look it up) but they take some ingenuity to make and are not "bling" to look at usually.
Any intake that draws air from anywhere inside the engine bay is a warm air intake....whether it be Berk, Frankencar, Injen, Dragon, or GAB. Great for the winter. Not as great for the hot summer.
Most of the WAIs (including the GAB, to some extent) have the following effects on performance:
- loss of low end
- gain at high end
- pretty much same midrange
- nice sound
- nice looks (well, except GAB)
The PR/Cattman CAI:
- no low end loss
- decent high-end gain
- slights midrange gain
- sound is nice at WOT, quiet when cruising
- looks ok, though you can't see the whole thing.
BTW for some background, I've owned:
- stock air box
- "classic" GAB
- "ported" GAB
- GAB with snorkel (drawing air from same place the Injen does)
- Frankencar short-ram (similar to Berk)
- Place Racing (current, and hands-down the best performer of the bunch)
btw, just in case you've never seen the PR/Cattman setup (most n00bs haven't, since not many people were able to get them):
in this pic it doesn't have the midpipe installed (kind of my own "hybrid" setup)

the piping passes through the fender underneath the battery tray, btw..

I have the Injen. My filter sits to the right of the radiator, not behind it. Does it draw in warm air? Sure it does, but so does a short ram.(ever felt how hot the engine cover/intake manifold get on the 5.5?) I haven't checked the air temp so I can't say which 'air' is warmer.
I get a nice sound at about 1/2 throttle and up.
It's strange, but 3 years ago when I got my Injen, all the posts said how the Injen was better for low end and the short ram was better on the top end. Interesting how perceptions change with time.
I'll probably try a short ram sometime. Then at least I can know for myself which one I prefer.

Did you drill a hole underneath the battery tray to get the pipe through and does the filter sit underneath the headlight? I have not really looked underneath the battery and see what options I have of running an intake pipe through this section.
Thanks
I have the Injen ( filter is directly under the battery) and have swapped between stock with K&N drop-in a couple of times, the low end power loss was marginal with the Injen but the 4,000rpm on up gains were huge, plus the sound at WOT is amazing. I really enjoy my Injen regardless of the air temp it pulls, but then again my intake is coupled with the Frankencar SS catback and a UDP that gives me a nice jump in HP. 2cents

old pic, now have the Stillen FSTB

Please just stop...
Not only does an Injen suck as an intake, it is a waste of $300. Your HUGE gain on the top end is in your head pal...
You can get a Berk for half of that and it works better. With your basic mods you would be much better off keeping your stock intake on, if you want to do something at most you should GAB your intake.
As for the UDP and Cat-Back... Stop acting like they add power, they really don't. The UDP helps with some quicker revs and the Cat-Back... Well that is like a 5hp gain, that equates to nothing at the wheels.
Ricer math is not good. Look at the dyno forum before you start making claims, not CE website.

Like I said I've swapped back and forth between stock and the Injen, also I've gone up against an 02 6spd stock and ate it for breakfast. Here's a quote from Brian Cattman himself "There you go, the catback and intake probably give you an extra 14-16hp at the wheel, and that does make a big difference. My 02 typically dynos in the 240-242whp range, which should be around 300 crank hp. Its surprisingly easy to get an extra 30hp from this motor given that its running so efficiently already."
and i have a 3.5 so i know what im talking about
I haven't been posting much since my last flaming, but I've been reading a lot. 14-16 WHP is a lot to wish for. Soonerfan, do you really like the O.S.? lol I never would have guessed. I give this thread another 1/2 hour before puppetmaster locks it.

if you are new to tuning, you actually believe the vendors and their math
No gains really...
1hp FTW!
jk
But really I'd go for other performance mods if HP gain is what you want. Just save up
I do have to agree the sound is pretty nice though. But $300 for some cool sounds?
In the end it's your decision. Choose wisely!

Btw, IMO, if anyone insists on quantifying the whp gains from specific mods, they should do a before and after independent dyno and post the results.
Guesstimating or using manufacturer/advertising dynos (which may or may not be credible) just invites more pointless debates like the one in this thread.
