Timing chain/Oil pump question
Timing chain/Oil pump question
I noticed that after my car is ran, with A/C off or On, on the highway or when the A/C is on the car will eventually start rattling like there is not enough oil getting around in the timing chain area. But when the car is around town with the A/C off it doesnt do the timing chain rattle. I notice this once Im either driving for some time and come to a stop to hear it sounding like crap or when driving by someone slowly I notice my car makes the sound. Could this be a failing Oil pump? I have oil in it and the exact amount but it still happens. I was thinking while driving that my oil pump may be dying out and not able to dish out the extra oil needed when on the highway for some time or with the A/C on. Could this be the case? Please help me out.
Q
To help
A/C On or off + highway driving = Notice of timing chain rattle at a stop light when coming off the ramp.
A/C On + around town driving = timing chain rattle
A/C off + around town driving = no timing chain rattle

Mileage on the Motor ?? Weight of Oil your using ?? Do you hear the noise on startup ??
May want to check your plugs ? They may be gapped improperly and causing some sparkblowout which is a similar sound.

79k miles on it now. 95 SE. I use Catrol GTX 10w-40. Noise is not heard on startup when sitting for a while but lets say I am driving with the A/C on around town or on the highway on or off and I stop to get some gas or stop some where and then come back the rattling is there upon startup but after driving windows down with no A/C around town or I drive for a little bit the rattling dyes out and everything is back to normal sound again. Quiet as can be. Or course thats until I turn the A/C on while driving or get on the highway with it OFF/ON then it starts the noise. Its not heard on the highway though due to Wind noise/ music that sort.
a little heavy on the oil. . .
test oil pressure.
timing chain rattle is pretty common with 95/96's. It usually goes away but sometimes doesnt.
I'll take a vid of mine and how it sounds. I swear sometimes it sounds like a desiel with the hood up.

Been there about the timing chain tensioner. Yes, thats what my vehicle sounds like when it occurs too. A diesel. Its nasty too. I had a valve cover gasket leak but that was fixed. Then the sensor on the timing chain cover, forgot what that is. That was also leaking oil. That was fixed with an O-ring going on it. I was heavy on the oil because before the valve cover gasket and the O-ring was installed we couldnt pin point the problem then it turned out that thats what it was so I was advised to use 10w 40 instead of 10w-30 since it only happens when the engine is at operating temps. Thicker oil will stay on longer thus lubricating better. But now I have come to this problem. Its annoying at times too.
