Can O2 sensors go bad w/o triggering a CEL?

Can O2 sensors go bad w/o triggering a CEL?

I think I read somewhere that O2 sensors can go bad without throwing any codes. If that is true, then how do people test them to see if they are up to spec?

O2 can get 'lazy'. And slow to respond. The more expensive OBDII readers can check response times on them. So can tools like the Genisys.
