CHASE, CRASH, SHOOTING
Jefferson deputies shoot suspect after brief automobile chase
Tuesday, September 26, 2006
By Mary Swerczek
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies shot and wounded a Metairie man Monday morning after he led them on a 2 1/2-mile chase that included two accidents and ended when he lunged at deputies with a hypodermic needle.

The chase began at 8:10 a.m. after deputies saw Jeffrey Ditzler, 47, standing outside a 2001 Nissan in the 8100 block of Balter Street in Metairie. A check of the car's license plate showed that it had been reported stolen Saturday in the 3900 block of Veterans Memorial Boulevard, said Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The deputies approached the vehicle, which Ditzler had entered, and ordered him to get out. Instead, he drove toward them and sped off, Fortunato said. The deputies took off after him.

Ditzler's car collided with the police car in the 3300 block of Illinois Avenue, where Ditzler also hit an occupied vehicle, Fortunato said. The woman inside the car, who wasn't identified, was not injured.

At that point, the deputies got out of the car and attempted to arrest Ditzler, Fortunato said.

"He actually tried to run them over at that point," Fortunato said, adding that one deputy shot at Ditzler three times, but authorities do not believe he was hit.

The chase ended less than half a mile away at 8:22 a.m. when Ditzler ran into a tree on Kentucky Avenue at Taffy Drive. He got out of the car and lunged at officers with a hypodermic needle, Fortunato said.

Each officer shot at him once and hit him in the leg and buttocks. Ditzler was taken to the Charity Hospital trauma unit at Elmwood Medical Center. His injuries are not life-threatening, Fortunato said.

The gunfire alarmed some neighbors.

Sean Doiron, who lives in the 3200 block of Kentucky Avenue, was in his back yard swinging his daughter in a swing set when he heard sirens, and then over the next few minutes, a total of what he believes were seven gunshots.

"We were basically concerned about why they were shooting at this guy while they were chasing him through the neighborhood," Doiron said, emphasizing that he's not saying the Sheriff's Office did anything wrong. But he was worried that someone might have gotten caught by a stray bullet. "That was my main concern."

The two deputies who shot Ditzler were taken to Elmwood with minor injuries they received in the car accident on Illinois, and were treated and released, Fortunato said.

It is against Sheriff's Office policy to reassign or suspend officers during a routine investigation of a shooting unless wrongdoing is suspected, which is not the case in this incident.

Fortunato didn't say what triggered deputies to conduct the computer search and discover the Nissan had been stolen, attributing it to information received by the deputies.

It's unknown whether Ditzler had a gun, but no gun was found and authorities do not believe he fired any shots, Fortunato said.

It's still sitting in the police impound. Front and rear are smashed and its got a couple bullet holes. Insurance is gonna total it. Hopefully they will pay me for the $1,500 system I just put in it or at least let me pull it out the car. Surprisingly the guy didn't steal anything from the car.

I guess I wasn't meant to own a Maxima. I've owned the car for 10 months and have only driven it for 4.

1st month - drove it around, enjoyed it

Then I got cut off by a guy weeving through traffic, smashed up the front end.

months 2-7 were spent in the body shop. The front end was so messed up it was nearly totalled. Because of Katrina the body shops that are still in business are busy so it sat for the first 3 months before they even started.

Months 8-10 I drove it, ordered new rims for it (sitting in my garage ) and I just put a new stereo (Receiver, components, 2 amps, 10" sub)

Now its totalled

So the car was stolen, what Fri, Sat. A.M. Recovered on Tues. What this idiot stayed in town for 3/4 days, and planned to keep driving it around with nothing missing from the car? So, what, did he have the keys? Sorry to hear your misfortunes though.

Anyways, I was expecting to read something like: Stolen Maxima evaded police who could not keep up. J/K. Too bad he smashed it up.

Use the bullet hole pic for the sig def. Photochop it a tad to highlight it.

You'll get your system back or they'll pay for it assuming you have full coverage.

How exactly do you steal a car that has a transponder in the key? Touching wires at the steering column doesn't do a thing in our cars without having the transponder within 6 inches of the ignition.

That's what I was thinking. This guy must have had a way in/out and a way to restart the car. In the interim of say 2-4 days, he's still in town. I know of a couple people left their keys in the ignition to run inside to return and find their car in the wind. Sooooo....?

Who are you insured by? Some companies wont pay for your system, even if you have full coverage. If they dont, they will tell you that you can get your stuff out. I recently had to do this since my Max just got totalled and it was a pain in the *** . I have Allstate.

Allstate is one of the worst for payouts anyway Usually its not covered unless you told them when you got it and added it to your policy.

For those of you wondering, he stole my keys from the gym. Broke into my locker, grabbed the keys, then took the car.

All of my stuff was still in the car except my wallet, haven't found it yet. Car is still in the police impound

The guy took it just to have a car. Hell, he caught a flat and put on the spare, notice the donut on the passenger side front. Guess he needed a car to drive around his female friends.

Sorry guys, I've been needing a truck so it looks like that's what i'll get. Was looking at some used ones before the accident, now I'm looking at new. I'll get the truck paid off in a couple years and buy a new Max then....or maybe a G35

Also, insurance still won't say if they'll pay for the stero equip or not. If they don't I'm gonna go and pull it all out and use it in my next vehicle or sell it on ebay

Most insurance companies will let you salvage gear. Make sure it's all there after sitting in the impound. This is where receipts come in handy.

That's where I would expect a police round to end up, if the cop was shooting at the suspect. They're notoriously good shots.
