hey guys i pulled my MAF to clean it using the CFC cleaner many of you have read about in Irish's old thread. I went to spray it and noticed there was no Thermistor. My car runs pretty normal. Except that it idles a little funny from time to time (especially when cold) but it hasnt died yet. I think it has always done this even after i replaced the maf earlier this year. But heres a pic. Should i worry about this? Doesnt ther Thermistor regulate the amount of air the engine uses?

Only 5.5 gens have an IAT thermistor in the MAF.

 

how is that possible? dont 5.5 genners buy the 2k1 mafs to swap the thermistor over to the 2k2's?

yea unless you have an 2002 or 2003 your maf doesnt have any IAT, I just did my swap this past weekend

 

wait.. ur saying that the 02-03's have thermistors (IAT correct? not down with the lingo ) and the 00-01's dont? that makes no sense because in that thread i posted, the thermistor was clearly circled on the 2k1 MAF. please clear up my confusion.

 

Look further in the thread you posted. The NEW MAF was a 2k1 MAF, as stated above the picture of it. In the writing underneath the picture with the circled thermistor, it talks about removing the thermistor from it to swap over to the new MAF(the 2k1).

Why would a 5.5 gen owner with a dead MAF buy a 2k1 MAF just to switch the thermistor over to the dead MAF? The whole reason the 5.5 gen owners have to do this fabrication is because they have the thermistor and the 5 gens do not, so they can't put a cheaper 5 gen MAF into the 5.5 gen without the fabrication.

to clear up your confusion: to put a 2k1 MAF in a 5.5 gen, it has to be a 2k1 MAF with a thermistor. The picture is portraying a MAF replacement for 2k3/2k2 Max.

 

The 5th gen uses a seperate IAT in the intake, and the 5.5 uses one attached right on the maf sensor. The 5.5 geners can use the 5th gen style by removing the thermister from their blown maf and installing it on the 5th gen style maf.

 

After all is said and done when swapping in a 2k1 MAF to a 5.5 gen, you have the 2k1 MAF and the 5.5 gen thermister

I appreciate the feedback... so in reality the situation was just backwards from what i originally thought. Im good now . But to answer Mist Max2000's question.. i pulled the actual sensor out and sprayed it. I really didnt know what to spray b/c alot of the sensor was plastic so i really didnt know what to spray. I was hoping to find a thermistor to spray but from this thread i dont have one (laughs). There was a area of metal(i think). If u look at my picture you see two square scoops one on top of each other (under the drill) I sprayed in there. I noticed very little difference. I THINK it shifts smoother but i havent really pushed the car today to see if it shifts any smoother. The only way ill kno is to wait for a cold day to see if the car idles funny.
Also i didnt see any K&n oil drip off the maf suprisingly after the cleaning. Had the new maf for about a year on the k&n.

 

you're supposed to clean the screen on the MAF...definitely not the IAT...
