After almost sliding sideways into a retaining wall last week, I've decided it's time to finally get some new tires. I normally consider myself a savy shopper, but unfortunately I feel like an idiot when it comes to buying tires, so please give me some suggestions for what I should get.

I'd like to keep the cost down (maybe under $500?), and traction is obviously important, so they should be all-season.

I called a few places around here (Denver), and here is what was recommended: (225-55-17)

Big O:
Goodyear Euro-something - 60k/4yr - $150 installed
BFTraction T/A - $120 installed

Firestone:
Bridgestone LS V - $205

Discount Tire:
KellySpringfield Arizona Silver Plus $142

What else should I ask for? I'd imagine here in Denver I can find just about anything. I looked at Tirerack, but I'm not too excited about ordering them online. The Kuhmo ECSTA ASX, Yokohama AVID, and Continental ContiTouringContact CV95 are all fairly low priced. Suppose I could find them locally?

Tire rack is great and ships fast. We ordered tires that were on national backorder (Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 40/245/19 and they had them in stock. Shipped it and 3 days later we had it. Their review section is great when comparison shopping for tires. These ratings come from real users and not some skewed/paid/biased crap you read everywhere else.

Think of Tirerack for tires like NewEgg for computer parts.

That is a nice site, thats how I picked those other tires, based on the reviews.

I found on Kumho.com that Discount Tire sells Kumho. Called them, and even got them to lower the price to match tirerack. $105 down from $116 per tire, installed, so pretty decent deal. I guess they figure $15 per tire for installation. I have an appointment to have them put on Monday, so unless someone tells me otherwise I'll probably go ahead with that.

 

Discount Tires all the way. They can match and order any tires you see on tirerack.com. Their $15/tire charge will cover warranty, lifetime balance/rotation, free repairs. Their service is excellent and the wait time is short. The other guys maynot give you all that. After Firestone, Goodyear, K-mart, Costco, Sam's I now stick with them for all Tires stuffs.
