squeezing more torque out of the maxima

i feel like my high end power on my car is pretty strong but my low end power is slackin hard. when i punch the gas from a dead stop it will barely even chip the tires. granted, yes i do have 18"s on it and i know that grip is a good thing, but it feels like something is seriously lacking. i don't think anything is wrong with my car at all. i have a TS ECU, y-pipe, cat-back, intake, high flow cat and unorthodox underdrive pulley. i want more low end power. is there anything that i can do short of throwing a supercharger on it? i'm getting a tune-up soon and getting a very minor exhaust leak fixed. do you think those 2 things could severely affect my low-end power? it's been about 2 years since i've gotten my spark plugs changed. i wanna burn some tire if i so desire lol, but as of right now i truly can't. my serious power kicks in at around 3500 rpms

Get rid of your 18's and switch to a 5 spd

correct me if i'm wrong but a VI really only concentrates on high-end power and can even take away from low-end as a result. and yes, i would love to convert to a 5-speed but it's rediculously expensive and i wouldn't have the slightest clue as to how to do it myself. but maybe one day!

would an exhaust leak and old spark plugs contribute to bad low-end power? probably not much if anything right? i just want more torque!!! ahh!!

Yes an exhaust leak and bad plugs will lose low end power. The vi actually gives gains all over the board. Specially if you have an ECU of AFC installed. If you want low end power you need to dish out a little more $$.

btw....all the stuff in your trunk is killing your low end power as well.

You need more displacement.

Bad knock sensor can rob serious power. If it hasn't been replaced recently you might want to try it. A friend with a 97 had a bad one and the performance sucked. Put a new one in and all was GOOD! The VQ is known for it's low end torque as far as a 3.0 liter goes.

That's odd cause maxima's are known for there low end torque, correct?

VI is out the question, maybe knock sensor, mafs, coils....

from what i can recall when i met you, you had a nice chunk of added weight. maybe that can be the difference.

Go with a good spark plug like NGK and fix that exhaust leak. That will solve at least part of the problem. You should be able to burn those tires even though you have 18's on your ride. You may have some other maintainance issues causing some additional power loss. This could be related to O2 sensors, MAF sensor, knock sensors, even a temperature sensor can affect your gas mileage and performance. Scope the car to see if it may be throwing some kind of code. Sometimes it boils down to replacing the most likely culprit until the problem seems to have been resolved.

Good luck!!!

I understand what you're going through. I have the same problem......when I take off from a standstill, the car is slow and only starts pulling hard when the RPMs hit 2750-3000. Then again, I have a lot of things I need to fix, like the KS, O2 sensors, exhaust, and oh yeah, the clutch....

in my experience an exhaust leak will definetly make a differenc. so will spark plugs.

I feel the same way. I only have a y-pipe but it feels like my low-end is seriously lacking especially when compared to my friends es300. I plan on checking my KS and cleaning MAF + TB soon though. What does the PCV valve do? and how much does it cost to replace it

Your maxima doesn't have the same giddy-up as a re-badged Camry? That's odd. My dad has a Camry v6 5spd, and my Maxima will walk his Camry in 1st-4th gears... he can catch up in 5th, though.

the 1999 es300 puts out 210hp/220lbs tq and i'm auto. Maybe it's the gear ratios? My maxima feels faster than our 2003 v6 camry for some reason though.
