Computers installed into your Maxima

who here has a computer installed into your 6th gen maxima? I was thinking about building a mini pc or buying a laptop that can connect to a small LCD screen in my dash.

Pictures would be nice....

are you serious????

the possibilites are endless.... wireless, bluetooth, mp3's, movies, navigation, video messaging, internet surfing and my favorite - driving through a neighborhood and finding wireless routers left unsecure....

Since I travel a lot in my car and since im a computer geek, it would be 1337 having a SMF computer in my car.

i'm with you on this one...

as a PC tech, i'm driving nearly half the day to appointments and stuff, and i've got over 120gb of music ALONE...damn the maxima for not having an MP3 deck!

imagine...you could have every single old-school console in your car, in one box! get a wireless RF controller, and you're set!

Yes the possibilities are endless and it is easier now more than ever to build and implement one.

IMHO the only way to do it is to use a 6.5" roll out screen or built in (if you have an Eclipse for example). The Maxima has double dins that works out fairly well for it (keeping a clean, factory look). 6.5" @ 640x480 is useless for any real computer work.

Sure you can play and store a lot of videos on them, same with music but meh, there are easier, less distracting ways for me. Not as cool, but more economical.

The only real benefits to me would be GPS and in car diagnostic. Even then I don't need GPS, my cell phone even has it, and every car I've ever put an CarPC in has never needed a code pulled.

They are fun to build and back in high school when I actually had nothing better to do than drive around and waste time in my car it was fun to use, but now if I need to use a computer when I'm out and about I'll use my laptop.

Exactly............

I plan on taking apart my dash and moving my factory screen down to the lower bay and placing a 6.5" screen in the top bay.

But this is where it gets interesting.....

I have a really nice laptop already. I want to route the RGB cord, USB cords and power cord to either under my seat or in the glove box. This way when ever Im not on the road, all I have to do is unplug the cords and remove the laptop.

Here in Arizona, it gets HOT in the summer and I dont want to fry my hard drive or processor. Soooo with the option of swapping out my laptop when its hot or dont need it would be cool....

Also, a laptop is small enough to fit under my seat. I can install a external hard drive case with fans in order to save all my music and movies.

you know what's retarded? i know that there are certain heat issues when you're dealing with an in-car computer, but i've seen pre-built PC kits going for as much as 1700 bucks!!! with a CELERON! that's just rediculous... i built a system for a client with a 160gb hard drive, an AMD Athlon 64 X2 (3800+, socket AM2), an ASUS mobo, 1 gig of DDR2 PC667 ram, and a NICE Zalman cooler for UNDER 600 dollars!!! and that included wireless mouse/keyboard, and an Antec case w/ power supply.

don't waste your money on those pre-built pieces of trash!

I run a carputer with an in-dash touchscreen simply for tuning. I have my EU up in real time, and I can see a/f, timing, realtime RPM's, etc. through my screen.

I also have lots of music on it as well. No mouse or keyboard needed.

I hear you on that one, that is why i am considering on putting my laptop under my seat or in the glove box. When it reaches 117 degrees in the summer, i can just unplug 3 cords and take the laptop inside.
