New rims making car shake....have balanced them 3 times already...

I bought new rims off of ebay, and after installing them, the car shakes. The tires are brand new and I have had them balanced 3 times and no matter what it still shakes. I believe some of the rims may be slightly bent, is there anything at all I can do to ease the shaking? This is the last time I buy rims off ebay.... any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Bent rims, poorly cast rims, tires, could be a bunch of factors. Does it shake at all sped?

I bought mine off ebay and mine starts to shake at about 60-65mph....i found out the the hole for the bolts were uneven and thats why it was shaking like that....you could see about getting little plastic spacers for them...i dont think there called spacers but it goes around the hub and it centers the rim more on that instead of the bolts.....dammit what is the name of them things... well there only about 10 bucks for all of them

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the hub centric rings...

But yeah, it could be alot of factors like RHMax said, but I think the highest cause might be the Bent Rim..

Well my car starts to shake in the steering wheel at about 55 to 60 and then fades away as I go faster. I then feel some shaking in the rear at higher speeds like 70+. Where can I find hub centric rings? I will give it a shot and see how it feels. Any other ideas?

If their 20's it should go away. I had the same problem when my 20's were fresh. Put at least 1000 miles then balance. Worked for me...

Make sure that the rims are torqued down to 85ftlbs. That is an issue with alloy wheels if they are not torqued it can cause wheel shake.

Here is a site that sells hub centric rings for your wheels:
http://www.1010tires.com/hubrings.asp

Try this one and put the manufacturer who made the wheels and it will tell you the size of the rings you need. I have ordered from them and they ship really quick and the rings fit perfectly.

This sounds stupid but i just had the same exact problem. you should try gettting a "harmonic" balance done. i don't know exactly how it works but i know it worked for my wheels. something about placing the weights against certain points in the tires where there are runouts to even it out. i really have no idea but ive had no problems for a week now

Had a similar issue with my rims..but just some minor shaking. Once I got some hub centric rings for them the minor annoyance dissappeared. This is definitely your cheapest solution. Try it first and if your problem persists then you can look further into the bent rim issue. Good luck.

Ive had this issue in the past. I had a set of 19" Zenetti fives on my TL. No one could ever get them balanced perfectly. I had road force balancing done and everything. A friend of mine who is a tire dealer told me a lot of sellers on ebay and these wholesale internet wheel places buy factory defect wheels. Wheels that arent 100% round, therefore, selling them cheap, but arent 100% true so they will always shimmy.

Try re-indexing the tire though. Have your tire guy actually break the bead and rotate the tire 180 degrees then rebalance.

which Shop/Machine did you use?

Try Firestone @Glostanbury by Putnam. This is a recently opened shop and they have a brand new hunter 9700. Plus the tire balancing tech is very good and an expert.

I took my car there knowing that it is new shop, and the shimmy went away completely.

it would cost about $60, dont forget to ask for life time balancing. you pay extra $15, and you get unlimited balance and rotation.

Yea I actually tried Firestone in Manchester, they told me their machine was new so I gave it a shot. Wasnt expensive, I paid $25 for the balancing, didnt do the lifetime.

Nope, allignment was also done. I have lifetime allignment. There was absolutely no difference in the shaking after it was done.

So guys, how do hubcentric rings work? Is there a ring that fits onto each and every wheel stud? So I need 20 rings? Any idea what size?

One per wheel, in the center of each hub. Size varies, go to a wheel/tire shop and have them get you the right size.

One thing I can say about buying from a reputable seller. I bought several sets from tirerack, and they always sent everything I needed like lugs and hubcentric rings.
