For a CA car, that looks like a decent deal if the car is in good to excellent condition, has been taken care of and never been wrecked. Edmunds has trade in at $8.7k / private party at $10.2k for a car with those miles in clean condition. Mileage is definitely higher than average. Of course, standard caviots apply. Private party or dealer? Any service history? Straight panels and matching paint? Carfax shows 12 records...worth a look to see what it says.
I just bought a high mileage maxima.
2001 GLE auto. 134K miles.
It was from a private owner.
Paid $6100.
Only thing car needed was tires. Extremely clean inside. Single driver and driven all over FL, thankfully never wrecked.
One thing carfax wont tell you is underhanded fixes. If the guy got hit but got it fixed himself and never reported to insurance, carfax will never get a report.
The things i'd suggest for a high mileage car are:
- Single owner
- Maintenance history. My car was serviced only at one dealership, the place the guy bought the car from. In the 130K miles driven ALL service is upto date. I was surprised to see the front bearing done once and the MAF done once. Other than that its had regular 3K oil changes and 30K trans oil changes.
Test drive the car for the obvious:
- struts generally are done for my that time. I just upgraded to illuminas this weekend and just noticed a HUGE difference.
- In your case check for a slipping clutch.
- If it has the bose audio watch out for the cutting in and out of the sub
I'm new here but just reading posts here, there is so much in these cars that at that high mileage an unmaintained car WILL need work.

10/13/2006 Dealer Inventory Vehicle offered for sale
I sell cars for a living and know how this stuff works.
The part about INCONSISTENT ODOMETER READING has me a little nervous. You could use that as a bargaining tool with the dealer. If the car is a TMU (total milege unknown) it will hurt the value and the dealer knows it. If you send me the VIN in a private message I'll pull a car-fax Monday at work and see if I can tell more.

It looks like someone entered 201,000 for the milege instead of 101,000 which would be consistent with the use the car was seeing. A few months later it was at 106,000 which seems right.
I would still try to use it to your advantage stating that future resale will be lower because of the inconsistency on the report. They may have even bought the car cheaper.
Once you buy the car, a call to Car-fax may straighten out the record.
It's kind of funny, this car has almost exactly the same milege as mine. Only about 100 miles difference.

A few 3.5 cars have problems with oil consumption. It's a very small number of cars though. No way to test for it.
The "3rd gear crunch" is common. There will be a crunch when shifting into third fast from a high RPM. It's caused by a weak syncro design. Nissan redesigned the syncro in 04. Some cars get it and some don't. Easy to test for. It's more of an annoyance than a major issue since it only happens when the car is being driven really hard.
The motor mounts can go if you're rough on the car. I broke one at the drag strip. Their not that big of a deal to replace and it's not like you'll be stranded if one goes. Replace them with the solid ones for an upgrade.
These motors are very solid. There are very few real problems with them.

I picked up an 03 SE (cloth) with 63K miles for 11.7K.
The rule is to keep $1k in your pocket for things that will need to be fixed relatively soon before arriving at your offer. Shocks, belts, fluid exchanges, brakes (pads, rotors), plugs, coils, axles, CV boots, racks, decarb/tb cleaning, flushes, tires, alignment, water pump, pulleys - $1k is a conservative kitty for attending a few of these that you will invariably have to deal with shortly.
