Suspension question

Guys, I am debating on purchasing some KYB/GR-2 struts and shocks. My 04 Maxima OEM struts have gone bad for the second time and since I have to pay for the repair myself I think I should go aftermarket. The price for these things are very cheap, how is the quality and how is the ride on drop springs. I have the OEM 18" rims and tires, I wont go any larger than that, i just want to get rid of the gap between the front fenders and tires.

Thanks,

Mike

GR-2s are good for stock springs, but not quite as good for lowering springs. If you're going to lower your car, you definitely want Koni/AGX instead of GR-2s.

I ordered eibachs and kyb gr-2 from the group deal. Why isnt this a good set-up? I hope i dont have to exchange my struts, i didnt even get them yet.

They might be too soft to handle stiffer Eibach springs.

^^ Exactly. They're made to be stock-replacement and can't be counted on to have enough damping to control Eibach springs properly. That will hurt your ride quality and might lead to premature blowouts.

Thanks for the replies. I wonder if anyone here has had problems with this set-up? On my last car (2001 Acura TL) i was dropped on Comptech springs with stock struts and never had a blowout. So what would be a better replacement strut?

I have Progress springs and KYB-GR2 struts/shocks and so do many fellow 6th geners.....so are you saying that we are in for an unpleasant surprise?

Stock dampers are usually more durable than the cheaper aftermarket replacement ones.

A better replacement damper setup would be Koni Yellows in front, KYB AGXs in back (only because they don't make Konis for the rear).

We were talking about Eibach, not Progress...

Either way, I wouldn't say you are necessarily in for an unpleasant surprise. Just that you definitely aren't getting the most of your springs, and that your chances of a blowout are higher than they would be with better dampers.

But hey, if it works, more power to you...

It's a very new kit and not many people have it, so you'll be hard pressed to find opinions. But rest assured that Cattman is a picky company and they wouldn't carry it if it weren't worth the price.
