Support the engine with the cherry picker and drop it out the bottom...

remove the y pipe to get easier access to the carrier bearing bolts. but a pivoting head 1/4" ratchet or breaker bar will do the trick. the investment in my Snap-On TH737 ratchet was WELL worth it for getting to those stubborn guys.

As for engine mounts and stuff, once you remove the two body mounts on the driver's side, you can leave the engine itself alone. the two large engine mounts will support the engine- albeit it will lean to the side a few degrees. nothing enough to cause any damage. support the tranny and unbolt the two mounts attached to it.
then pull out all the bellhousing bolts and separate.

In fact, you don't even have to remove the pass side axle. you can remove the tranny without pulling it. makes it a bit easier to reinstall the tranny as well since it gives you something to aim for with the back of the transmission.

If you stripped a bolt, I find Vice Grips to always be handy!

I was concidering doing a 5 speed swap sometime in my life, so thanks for making this thread! Will help me conciously prepare!

Exactly which bolts on the mount? there are 6 on the rear tranny mount. you can take it apart a couple of different ways, so you may be able to finagle the thing out by dissassembling the rest of the mount and provide enough clearance to drop the tranny and then remove the stripped ones.

also.. 6 point sockets and wrenches are your friend now. don't even think about using an open end wrench or a 12pt socket.. the $10 to go buy a 6pt wrench or $5 to buy a socket will be well worth it.

Yeah, never use anything other than a 6 point socket to break bolts loose, also it might help to spray some liquid wrench/pb blaster on the threads of the mount bolts to help loosen the rust..If you do decide to get some 6 point sockets,i suggest getting a higher quality brand of socket like craftsman or cobalt,or even better get snap on..I have noticed of the years that cheap sockets tend to strip bolts just as bad as a using the wrong socket[i.e 12 point] Probably due to low quality metals used in a cheap socket...

tissue over the socket will help to get a grab on those stripped bolts.

save yourself a lot of time and skip removal of the right axle. just pry and pull the tranny away from it, make 100% sure you've removed all the bolts because there's a couple that are tough to see. if all engine/tranny bolts are removed a little prying will separate it pretty easially. for reinstallation be careful and slide it straight onto the axle again. it's a hell of a lot easier and faster than dealing with removal of the axle, plus the input shaft will act as a guide.
