Hey guys,

I have a 99 SE that just developed a starting problem. The car cranks but does not start up. I changed the fuel pump but that was not it.

Today I noticed that when I enter the key and turn it to the ON position, the red security dot is lit. I've never seen this light lit up before, so I just did some searching and found out that the light should not be on. So what is wrong here?

Check your fuses in the engine bay with a voltmeter....a fellow Orger had the same problem (minus the security light) and come to find out a fuse was out. I do not remember which one (sorry) but try it. Good luck.

Is the light lit or does it flash?

I know exactly what you need to do, get your car towed to the dealership and have them reprogram your keys, you have to tow it there b/c they need the car with them. This has happend to me two times! Try to get your money back from changing the fuel pump.

 

can't I re-program the keys myself?

and what would cause the key to de-program?

I only have 1 key btw

The dealership is the only place to get it reprogrammed, sorry to break it too you. It's like $85 bucks too. This probably happend if you magnitized your key or somehow the immobolizer just dropped the program, BTW this was the reason to why I sold my car.

and you know what ****in sucks more...the car is getting traded in this Friday for an Audi and I'm going to spend like 400 on it this week.

 

Yeah becareful, the stealership might tell you that you need a brand new ECU, tell them to f*ck off and just to reprogram your keys and get rid of the car!

 

Had the problem, hopefully won't have it again....it was like $90.92 after taxes i think

 

Is the immobilizer disarmed with the key itself or do you disarm it with the remote entry? I'm having a starting issue as well but I'm not sure if it's this.

 

I'm pretty sure there wasnt an immobilizer until the 99 model.

 

You are right, it started in the 99 models.

 

i should be worried.. i a few weeks ago i noticed my Security light on while driving.. Thought it was kinda strange. So i turned off my engine, key off.. and then restarted the car and the light went off.. I hope i dont run into this problem. If so im gonna rip the stock 99 wiring harness off and install a 96-98 one.

 

If you can do it, I would. This problem causes so much pain and stress.

 

Update: It was the key....cost to reprogram was $99.50 after taxes.

 

Hi, I'm also having a problem with my ignition immobilizer. I'm having the exact same problems as madboxer but the only difference is that I have a spare key but it also does not solve the problem. However, I had not tested it before so it may not work too. All fuses and relays are good and ECU isn't throwing any unusual codes. I have heard of keys going bad and plan to take car to the dealership tomorrow to re-program keys if I'm unable diagnose any electrical problems within the ignition or wiring harnesses with a multimeter. However, before I get overcharged and lied to, are there any other measures I should take in order to diagnose and/or confirm that this is indeed a key problem. Also, do I have to bring the vehicle or are they able to look up information with the VIN. Also, can they re-program old keys or will I have to buy new ones first. This and any other additional info ya'll can provide will be very helpful. Thanks

 

DO THIS!!!!: Stick your key in the ignition, turn it to ACC mode (when all the lights on the dash is on) and see if the security light stays lit, if so go to the dealer. If not, than you have some other problem.

 

Ok. And I'm aware that you need to bring the vehicle with you but with tow charges and keys i'm looking at 200+(towing is outragous in houston). Am I able to bring only the ECU since that's where the transponder code is stored? Also, do they replace or reprogram keys, or is it on a case by case basis.
