96 max GLE is a slug

Hi guys I have a 96 maxima gle. For the past several months I've had an idle problem with the car. The only mod i have is a warpspeed y-pipe.

Problem 1: IF i try to start the car...sometimes it idles rough and the rpm's fluctuate before they reach the correct 700 rpm. I read the stickies and i believe it may be a grounding issue.

Problem 2: When I get caught in traffic for more than 10 mins or i let the car idle for 10 mins then step on the gas....the car struggles and has no power. If i sink the gas it takes a while before it reaches 40 mph. If i shut the car off and start it again the problem goes away.

Overall the acceleration on my car has been poor...I ran the computer and got 2 codes.....

code 1: vss which i found was the sensor in the cluster.

code 2: serial communication link error. (what the hell does that mean)

I love my max simply because it was such a peppy lil sleeper....but lately i've been real disappointed with her performance. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

I've already cleaned the throttle boddy, IACV and changed fuel and air filter.

try cleaning the MAF ( it might have blown ) . Or try changing the knocksensor. Whats your mileage ??? A bad knock sensor or MAF often results in a weak low end . Check the stickies , there is a way to check a faulty knock sensor code there. It wont throw a CEL so you have to manually check it.

get us the Pxxxx codes instead of telling us what fault it is.

your first fault for VSS, most likely the case is with one of your speed sensors. probaly got clogged up with enough metal crap and a cleaning or a new one is needed.

your 2nd fault. first off i have no idea what it is, and i dont think anyone can help you because thats not enough information needed. taking a random shot i think it might be a bad ECM which is VERY VERY rare so i would rule that out. I've seen a fault for ECM "internal check sum error" but never on a nissan but they happen all the time on VW's

did these problems and faults happen before you touched the car?

your idle is related to your IACV all 4th gen have issues with this.

Rescan your ECU at autozone or however you do it and get a detailed print out of the Pxxxx codes.

god help me!

Ran the computer again....here are my codes :

MY CAR HAS 123,000 MILES EXACTLY. ORIGINAL ENGINE AND TRANNY
AND YES "TURTLE" THESE PROBLEMS EXISTED BEFORE I TOUCHED MY CAR

P0100 - MAF/VAF CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION

P0500 - VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR A MALFUNCTION

p0150 - (bank 2, sensor 1) o2 sensor circuit malfunction

p0120 - tps/pedal position sensor A circuit malfunction

p0600 - serial comm link malfunction

p0732 - gear 2 ratio malfunction

p0733 - gear 3 ratio malfunction

i THINK I HAVE THE MAF MALFUNCTION BECAUSE I STARTED THE CAR TODAY AFTER I PLUGGED THE MAF OUT....IT STARTED THEN DIED AND i ASSUME THE COMPUTER RECORDED THAT ERROR TODAY.

pLEASE HELP GUYS. i"M GOING TO SEARCH THE STICKIES TO SEE HOW TO FIX THE GEAR RATIO PROBLEM. tHANKS AGAIN

i think your gear ration problem can be traced to a bad throttle position sensor because i had a p07032 and a new TPS fixed my problem. GL with rest.

From what read the P0500 and P0600 seem to be connected. I have a steady P0500 code with the P0600 coming up about half of the times I scan. Try replacing the VSS in the transaxle and/or tightening up the screws on the back of the gauge cluster. For me the VSS did nothing, but tightening up the screws eliminated the codes for about a month. The next step, for me at least, is to get a new cluster.
