S/C, Turbo or 3.5swap

Hey I need more power, I have a healthy 3.0 motor in my 97 and currently running nitrous.

The question is should I go with a 3.5 swap, turbo or s/c the current motor. I drive this car daily and can not have alot of down time installing the parts and for that reason was leaning towards the s/c since the current motor is fine but a 3.5swap would also be nice. I do not know much about turbo setups but it does not look plug and play like the s/c

all opinions welcome

Well my opinion if the motor is healthy and your using it as a daily driver, I would recommend S/C. You stay away from alot of the heat from a turbo, and you still have tons of power at your foot with still staying a daily driver.

yeah was thinking s/c with a good motor and 3.5 if the motor goes bad. turbo makes alot of power but needs to much attention

Matty how much for the s/c kit and what else will I need to complete it

supercharger is a much better setup for a daily drivin car... especially if most of your drivin is done around the city areas (light to light). There arent as many components therefore theres less to go wrong.

Besides, I'd take the loss of torque as long as I get to keep that sweet whine from the blower

Whats the 'attention' that a turbo needs that a supercharger wouldnt? I'm just wondering because i dont know much about either. I'm also leaning towards a supercharger myself.

Turbos are alot harder to tune and keep running..there is alot more heat there alot of subjects for melting and burning and what not. Oil feed and drain lines are alot longer and also subject to melting. The S/C are proven just to install, get a good tune and run them.

There are aguments for either side though. Some guys love turbo's some love S/C's....

there seems to be alot more tuning needed with turbos, and alot of little parts here and there to make it work right and it all adds up. In the end it's money turbo's seem to be more money and time

Do not get me wrong I would like to have a turbo setup and if I could do 1 for the same price of a s/c I am on it.

Ok cool. I've been saving up for *some* major mod, and looks like your kit would be it. I'm about halfway there....hopefully you're still selling them when i'm ready to buy.

honestly i'd rather have a 3.5 swap, a super charger or a turbo have to be maintained frequently, unless u know what ur doin, I wouldn't suggest havin a SC or a turbo, 3.5 is the safest in terms of daily driver

I disagree I've had a 3.5 for over a year and a half and I hardly consume ANY oil at all.

I did burn oil but it was more like half a qt. every 3k. Running 13's NA made up for that though.

Low end torque is great for stop and go, and the entire swap can be done for pretty cheap.

But no one can beat the sound of the turbo spooling!

Get a 3.5 swap and call it quits. Get a nice leakdown test done on the engine so you don't get one that drinks oil like a college student drinks bud light.

Why not turbo a 3.5? In all seriousness... if that were me I would lean more toward the 3.5.

hey who did your swap and how much did it cost, I emailed tilley for a price.

right now I am trying to compare prices, from what I hear 3.5 swap 3000 installed, s/c 2000-2500 not installed, turbo around 2500 no installed.

I do not have the tools for a engine swap so I will have to pay some-1(but who in my area does the swap), a turbo or s/c I will do myself

also if I go with a 3.5 swap I can still use my nitrous and have a newer motor

who does 3.5 swap in the phila, south jerz area and how much. I do not have the tools for a engine swap and can not tie up my uncle's garage for a week getting the engine in. this is the only reason I am looking into s/c and turbos cause I can do this at home

I have no clue, if you lived closer to me I could give you the names of a few people... try checking the regional forums. You should be able to find somebody there. Good luck with whatever you do.

you can always change the timing on the 3.5 and put the s/c on that
vote for supercharger

Since you're in PA, you're fairly close to Tilley if you can't do a 3.5 swap yourself

if u have all the parts u need IMO a SC would require the less down time....if u ship ur car off to Tilley for the swap its prolly going to be down for a week or two...also IMO there is more to go wrong with swap....jsut because of all the part mixing and matchin

Way too many variables that have to all come together. If they dont then your out the entire swap with either a blown motor, a motor that drinks oil, or deciding if your going to swap back to 3.0 or risk getting another 3.5.

I vote 3.5. You wont regret it. Get a few guys to help you out, one with a shop/access to one would be great. You're looking at a weekends work(not totally sure, never done it) with a few forum/max guys. Also, The 3.5 is a great platform for later modding, IE, the Turbo. Also, you got the nitrous on the 3.5. I would go that rout.

I vote for Matty's setup, which is the setup I was gonna do before I even knew of Matty.. S/C'ed DE-K swap. VERY reliable!

i can honestly say that JeEve's turbo setup is just as if not more realiable than my s/c. He seems to have more problems with trannys than i do though. If i could do it all over again i would rather have the turbo, you can have power and torque. BTW a 2500 turbo kit must no consist of much, really good deal, or used parts because when i was pricing things out pipes along would cost about 1300 for ss + a decent size turbo for 700 and your are already at 2000 and a lot more parts to go.

3.5 FTGay.. If it didn't come in your car from the factory, then I'm not gambling with the 3.5. I would trust only someone like Tilley with that engine. Too many stories of burning oil and destroying head gaskets.

We do have a lot of guys who have no probs, like Nismology and GoalieKeg.. But quite a few of the guys DO have catchcans that fill up rather quickly.

Altimta guys and 350Z guys, some have the same issues, NOT all of them. 3.5 is a risk
