Removing stock shift ****

What do I win???

Anyways, I had a quick question that I could not find in the FAQ's. When removing the stock shift ****, is it necessary to use pliars in order to get them off. I have heard that they use a thread sealer at the factory to keep them on but what is the story? Any feeback is appreciated. Thanks.

Wrap a towel around the stock *** and grab a set of large vise grips and go to town.
That's what I had to do to remove my stock *** about 2 weeks ago.
If your careful, you can do it without damaging the leather.
good luck

I found it impossible to remove. I ended up hacking at mine with an exacto knife.

Im not worried about the old **** at all, its become unsewn so it most likely going to be tossed, but is it glued to the shift boot? I wouldnt like that to happen.

Mine wasnt glued to the shift boot. Just do like JSMax said. Wrap a paper towel around it and take pliars and start twisting. Just try to not be too agressive with the shifter because you could possibly do some damage to the tranny.

The stiching on mine came loose. When I grabbed it in my hand to unscrew it the seams split open completely. I just sewed it up again using a curved needle and 4-ply black cotton thread. Took 20 mins.

Mine was utterly destroyed by removing it. I tried to be careful, but the threadlocker was much stronger than the leather. With a towel I couldn't get enough grip with the pliers. Without the towel, it tore the leather. YMMV

BTW you're actaully the 510297th thread. Nice try

it should break free of everything; no glue to the boot or shifter threads. i used a strap wrench like this one

and got mine of and tightened the new one down with no damage at all. don't worry about damage to the tranny either. as long as you apply smooth, steady pressure and don't jerk it around, you will be fine.

Maybe some were threadlocked and some weren't. Mine was the equivalent of Excalibur.

Anyone have the AE shift **** out there? If so how does it fit up to the stock setup on a 4th gen? Does it match the shift boot fairly well? Whats the story?

you can get a new shift boot from redlinegoods.com, and get it to the same height as the shift ****, but it should fit good, unless you put a short shifter on.

does anyone know where to get a 20th anniversary shift ****

People have it. It fits perfectly and matches the boot well, but I agree with VQ30DETT- the redline goods boot is the way to go.

If anyone has a pic of the AE **** w/ or w/o the redline boot, please post it for reference.

Heres a pic of what it looks like. I believe it has a redlinegoods boot.

I called Dave B a few weeks back about one, and he said that he would have to special order one, and would be very expensive. Courtesy Parts has one for $60 + shipping at the website listed below. I think im going to order mine tonight.
