a couple weeks ago i pulled the jackpot evap code.. no accompanying code. Today I bought a new gas cap in hopes I'd fix the problem. Well just now I was looking around the engine bay and listening to my throttle (I have a lack of fuel pressure and my car is idling lower than normal.. probably related to the evap code) when I look around the crankcase area I noticed this...


Can someone tell me what this is and what it's leaking?? I'm afraid it may be fuel but being an amateur I couldn't find the thing in the FSM. Help please I don't want my car to blow up!

Thats pretty common. The sensor is the camshaft position sensor. It has a rubber O ring thats leaking some oil.

 

mm so do i likely only need a new oring, or should I get a new sensor? I take it that's not causing throwing my evap code?

 

which evap code did you get ? and did you reset the ecu after you installed a new gas cap ?

 

Just checked the ecu decoder.. 0705 Evap control system. It's not accompanied by another more specific code.. yet.

Yeah I've reset the ecu after installing the gas cap but that was just this afternoon so I don't know if that was the problem or not. I definitely did NOT have any hiss when opening my nearly empty tank. I'm hoping the gas cap will be the problem.


**Okay assuming the sensor itself is okay (it's not throwing a code) I should be able to clean it up and replace the o-ring. Is there anyway to find out what size o-ring it uses? I can't exactly take the thing off and then go drive to an auto store. I'd rather go and get a new one and then drain the oil and replace.**

I guess the sensor you're talking about is the Evap canister vent control valve. 0705 is evaporative control system code and it could be one of many things. If you had no hissing sound while opening the gas cap, most likely the gas cap was the problem.

Drive on highway by following the driving pattern from page 9-19 in your owner's manual book("Readiness for inspection/maintenance test"). If the gas cap wasn't the problem the code will comeback as soon as you complete the driving pattern.

If the code comes back, drive with it for a few weeks and check for additional codes every week. If the problem is in one of evap system sensors, you will get additional code.
I had 0705 most of the time and after a few ecu resets it was paired with vent control valve code (I think 0309).

Be very careful with vent control valve! When I took it out to put some oil in it and put it back I felt that the screws are stuck and spinning inside the canister. So when I bought a new valve, I couldn't take the old one out because the screws were stuck, so I had to buy a new evap canister. Many people had the same problem.

Just drive on the highway and tell us if the code comes back.

 

The sensor is the one pictured above, camshaft position sensor that jsutter identified. That is unrelated to the evap issue. I bought a bag of random sized o-rings at advance today, hopefully one of them is the right size for the cam sensor.

As for the evap issue, I will give the driving pattern sequence a try; thanks I had forgotten about that. I won't be able to do that for a while with all the snow moving in tonight though

 

Ok so I pulled my cam sensor.. there was no oring on it, nothing. Apparently it disintegrated??? Well I got a random pack of orings from advance and put one on. Now I'm having starting issues, I really have to crank to get the car to start. I'm thinking that my replacement oring is too thick. Since there wasn't one on the sensor I have no idea what it looks like, if it's flat or tubular, etc. Can someone tell me what kind of oring to get, or at least what shape it is. I think the oring is too thick and is keeping the sensor from fitting properly. Help please!

 

I don't see anything in the FSM about an o-ring on the cam position sensor, and come to think of it I don't remember seeing one on there either (had the timing cover off last two days, had it in hand a few times).

 

hmm that's weird. I searched a couple of threads and people mentioned their cam pos. sensor needed a new oring, as did jsutter above (from what I've read of his threads he's quite knowledgable). But I did find it VERY odd there was no oring, or fragments of one. Anyone else??

 

Anyone have any info on the oring? I pulled it off last night and the car fired right up.
