I have been driving 40 miles a day and I can see my gas going down two half way when its on a full tank.
Is this normal?
I have done a tune up a month ago. The car does have 170K.
Or am I just driving too fast in the freeway(80-100)

on the gas note: lots of things contribute to low MPG, but 40 miles for half a tank seems, umm how should i say it politely, FRIGGING HORRIBLE

yeah something is definitely wrong there, u R driving kinda fast, but that will not kill gas that fast. What are the codes you are throwing, reaserch the stickies and fix what it is thats wrong in your car, there is no secret to it.

 

If you are getting 40 miles/half a tank, you have a fuel leak somewhere. Cant even say you are burning rich since you are getting around 5 miles/gallon at that rate. smell gas?

 

yea not good at all. i drive 84miles on a little less that 1/4 tank!

 

Do you see gas on the ground when the car is at idle?

 

Wow nearly 80 miles a tank, you're better off taking a cab or something.

 

It could just be a faulty gauge. Have it checked out because if you aren'y noticing leaking fuel, then I would have to believe that the gauge is broken.

 

If you can't see any noticeable leaks, fill the gas tank up and reset the trip odometer. Drive the car until the light comes up, fill up to the brim and calculate your mpg and report back.

In the meantime slow down! You won't get stellar fuel economy at the best of times cruising at 80 to 100 mph.

 

No you wont, but I think that to get 80 miles a tank, youd have to cruise around 130.

 

I fueled up on Saturday afternoon. Set the trip and as of this afternoon I have gone 170 miles on a take of gas. I need to fuel up again. Its at 1/4 line. And I have only been driving between 60 & 70 mph. Im also pulling 2 codes at the moment too P1105 & P1130 and not sure if they would be the cause of the suckie gas milage.

Just done a long road trip. Gas mileage was terrible, it only gave me 22-23 in Nebraska/Iowa. Improved a bit in Denver, 25mpg...but then it jumps to 29 in Utah, only to drop again to 25/26 mpg on the way to California.

Usually I get close to 30/31 mpg...this is really weird.

 

I think anything under 18mpg for regular, not-lead-footed driving is abnormal.

First check out those codes. P1105 is the MAP sensor. P1130 is the swirl control valve, which apparently applies to Cali spec 99's only. P1130 is a throttle plate that controls air flow into the individual cylinders, and is supposed to restrict flow during idle and light load operation. This swirl control valve certainly will affect fuel economy, from what I can read. Get both of those checked out - it could be as simple as an unplugged connection to these sensors.

So, if all that checks out, that kind of fuel usage has to come from a stuck-open fuel injector or a leak.

If you can't find any fuel leak, I suggest you change the plugs, and lay them out carefully so that if one looks a whole lot different than the others, you know which cylinder has the fuel injection problem.

I think the guy was joking, look how many days have passed since he created this thread and he has not even responded EVEN ONCE. so i think this thread is a bust!!

Come on is that even possible to get mileage that low ? you would have to be running on like 3 cylinders with one gear on your tranny, haha thats pretty much not feasible.

 

No way to get that milage without a serious leak. impossible to have that serious of a leak without smelling it.

 

If his gauge is faulty, he can do the tried and tested method of estimating fuel economy.
- fill up tank
- reset trip or write down mileage
- drive
- refill and note # of gallons filled, new trip mileage
- simple math, miles driven since last fill divided by # of gallons filled for mpg

puppet has to elaborate on vehicle history; what tune up was performed, how long has he had the car & try to figure out if he was getting better economy before, etc.

Northridge is in southern CA close to LA, I do not know if there is a winter blend gas distributed there. Maybe someone can elaborate.
