Manual or auto?

The manual transmissions can leak due to a damaged or old axle seal. But, if the tranny needs rebuilt, the axle will move around enough that oil will leak past even a brand new axle seal. Get under the car and grab the big rusty end of the axle near the tranny. If you can move it at all in a side-side or up-down direction, your leak could be from the worn-out tranny bearings. Most maxims tranny that need a rebuild start out exactly like this. If this is true, then get it taken care of as soon as you can. At least top off the tranny fluid. The longer you wait the more likely you will destroy the internals of the tranny. I've had good success rebuilding them right when the first show loose bearings/axle leaking, and the cost is kept down to labor and a new bearings/seals kit.

I think auto is more complex, that is just what I have heard, all my experience is with manual trannies. 1st thing is to get under there and see where it is leaking from. Check both axle seals and then in the back of the tranny where your shifter linkage connects and in the middle where it bolts itself together. You need to know where its leaking from first before you can diagnose the problem

I've only done manual trannys. As far as I know, the auto trannys don't have much of a problem with bearing wear.
