Clicking when turning the steering wheel?

What would cause this? It really only happens when I am turning the wheels when I am stopped. I will get a rapid clicking noise. Everything feels fine while I am driving. What would cause that? This is happening on my 95 GXE. Thanks for any help.

What would fail in the strut mount that would cause it to make a rapid clicking noise when turning the wheels? How do you know that's what is wrong with your car if you have not fixed/tried fixing it?

if it does only when you turn then its you cv axle, that means the rubber boot of the axle that holds the grease either broke or just dried out
mine had the same problems and it cost like 150.00, depending where you go

What would a steering rack do if it was messed up or on its way out? My car is lowered on Ground Controls, currently it has a drop that looked very similar to my S-techs, but once the bad weather is gone I lower the front all the way down on my 18's. I am really hoping this is not the problem but I just thought I would throw it out there since I am not aware of what it will do when it is going out/screwed up.

I had the same rapid clicking as you are describing while turning the wheel and while the car was NOT in motion. I replaced my strut bearing and the problem was solved, the stupid little plastic bearing didn't even look bad but it was def. the source of the problem.

hmmmm...ok, I will make sure I change those. I will be lowering the car back down to the summer height soon and probably replacing the struts at the same time so I will get some new bearings, even though I just put new ones in there less than 10k ago.

i had the dealer tell me its the strut mount or the the plate thats sits on top of the strut that clicks when you turn the wheel sitting still. its not a big deal, you can replace the strut mount on just the bad side if your tight on cash.

Does it happen at very low speeds too? I ask because mine does what you are saying when I back out of my garage and turn out onto the street, but once in motion all is fine.

no, its just sitting still, and its not an emergency to fix. if you feel uneasy, take it to someone you trust and let them listen. good luck.

Sounds like the bearing to me (my bearings are gone too). The bearing is sometimes referred to as the mount as well.

Definitely not the CV joint. It clicks while turning the wheel and stopped, not while moving with the wheel turned.

i get that too. park your car with the steering wheel straight and look at your two front tires. they should look straight (like: | |) for me, my camber on the passenger front tire is off (which makes my tires look like: | \ ....that a little exagerated though). the poping would come from the tire slipping. an alignment would fix it, which is hopefully happening today for me.

you check that too. mine happens mostly at low speeds, but sometimes turning corners too.

Could you tell me why you think that? Both axles are less than a year old. How would a CV joint cause this?

Your cv joint would click while in motion.

i have a similar problem in the car, and reading thru the forums i beleive its the strut mount, not sure until it's been properly checked out, but here's what i have examined so far, when i was changing the front driver's side tire and was loosening the 5 bolts, i could hear the same knocking noise that comes when turning while the vehicle is stop or a quick turn when in motion, or while driving over bumps, and when i suddenly press on the gas paddle when the car is in motion or take my foot quickly off the paddle when picking from a complete stop... i noticed that the wheel and shock actually moved back and forth when i forced the bolts to tighten/loosen, i tried loosening the bolts on the front passenger side and everything is fine, no noises or loose movement.
i think its the mount, most members have had the same problem and have solved this problem by replacing the strut mount...

Hey man, I know you are new and cannot post your own thread, but please don't do this in my thread.

If you springs are binding a poping then most likely you need strut bearings, once they break they do not allow the spring to trurn when you turn the wheel so the springs blind/flex and then pop.

cardana24, I believe your problem will be solved with new tie rod ends and ball joints. Check for bent inner tie rods as well. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. I am pretty sure the problem is a strut bearing, but I have not fixed it yet. Yesterday I adjusted my suspension to nice weather height and noticed the strut bearing on the passenger side was all broken up, peices were falling out of it. I am pretty sure that is what is causing my rapid clicking but I have not had a chance to get parts to try to fix it yet. I'll report back once I get a chance to replace it, I'll try to take a picture of the broken one.

Same thing here, clickinf while turning wheels and stopping.

It comes after my drop, so yeah, 90% of chance thats the strut bearing.

good luck

I am getting the clicking noise also and a very loose steering wheel, would it be a better idea to just replace the whole strut rather than taking it apart to replace the bearing only?

yes, unless you have new struts which i can't imagine you do if your plates are that bad. mine have clicked since day 1 and i've never worried about it. i'm more worried about the power train ........

the bearing that I am talking about is not inside of the strut, so if you replace the strut and have a bad strut bearing you are not going to fix the problem.

When I took my broken strut bearing out I was able to slide it off of the top mount with out taking my strut out....it was that broken. It was in 3 peices and their was not much left. I was able to put the new bearing on with out taking the strut out either. I took the strut top nut off and pushed it through the strut mount with tha pair of needle nose pliars. Once I had it down that far I pushed it a little further and was able to push it a little bit more with my fingers, at this point I just pushed the bearing over the top of the strut then let the strut go back up through the mount (also I put my dampining on "1" before I did any of this so the strut would be easier to push down). I also took the advice of JSutter, I put some rtv on the top of the top flat surface of the bearing so that it would stick to the upper mount, so that hopefully it will stay in place and not keep breaking. My car is currently at the shop being aligned. Hopefully everything is good to go now.
