Need to change transmission oil. How many quarts?
I need to change my transmission oil but do not know how many quarts of oil it takes to replace the oil. I saw my mechanic do it once and it seems that the measurements had to be exact. He also had to do something within the vehicle to ensure that the oil was sufficient (change gears or something). I have an automatic.
Also, what brand of oil is recommended?
Thanks for your input!

a drain/fill is about 4.5 quarts. add 4qts at first, then top off from there.
DexronIII is the correct fluid. use the cheapest DexIII you can find -- in the past I used wal mart supertech and it worked fine. now I use amsoil. do not use LubeGard (black), especially not an entire bottle for a single drain/fill. don't bother with matic D, it's a substandard fluid at a premium price. many bad UOAs with it.
about lubegard -- there are multiple lubegard products (red, black, platinum). the black bottle converts standard DexIII to an HFM (highly friction modified) fluid -- basically it lowers the friction coefficient of the fluid so the clutches in the transmission slip more. but nissan specs straight DexIII, so if you add lubegard black you are just making your transmission slip unnecessarily. and an entire bottle will cause serious slipping and clutch wear.
if you want to waste extra money on regular Lubegard Red it is your choice, but a better and more cost effective solution is to just do more frequent drain/fills. a drain/fill with cheap DexIII costs less than a bottle of lubegard, and only takes 10 minutes. do it every 15k miles and your transmission will last 300k miles.

Full flush is 10 qt's. the lnk is the method to change all of it and nto jsut mix old with new (which is what your mechanic probably did while changing gears).
