AE headlight mod question/pics

i tried the AE headlight mod today and i wiped th silver part inside the headlight because there was some dirt in the there and i wiped off the silver reflective coat.... i went and got some chrome paint and i painted the in side and i got some heat resistant clear coat to put over it, but it turned grey...... pics below!

my question is, will the chrome enamel paint be fine?, the heat wont do anything to it?

It depends on what kind of enamel you plan on using. Read the label as it should tell you something about the temperature.

Yes it will suffer...just look at the light. The point of the chrome is that it reflects the light out in a pattern. Having gray paint in there instead of the chrome reflector will hinder output. If you have parts of the chrome chipped off you should be fine. The more that comes off the worse it will be.

What exactly did you use to wipe the dirt out with? You must not have used a soft rag as that wouldnt chip the paint off. I took a rag and waxed the inside of mine with not a bit of chrome coming off. You definately rubbed to rough or used something. Your basically screwed. Either get some chrome paint and repaint or retrofit those things or buy new ones.

I don't think you can find a paint that will act like a reflector. Paint is paint. I've never had chrome paint that actually reflects. I think it's going to have to be new lights.

i used a tissue to wipe it
when i painted it chrome, it was kinda fine, till i put the heat resistant clear coat.....

there is a duplicolor paint at oreily called iliminite... it reflects light, and even if the lights are off and light shines on it it will glow... it looks just like the yellow part of the construction workers safety jacket... i was thinking of using that paint but i am kinda skeptical, and besides, its 11 bucks for a tiny can....

whats the cheapest retros gonna run me?

Retro will be kinda crappy with the '95-96 headlight lens. If I were you I'd do what gtr_rider did, pick up a set of CE housings (with clear lens) and use the lenses from the CE housings with the housing/body of the '96 housings together and do a retrofit in that. You can use the body of the CE housings with the lens of the '96 housings while the retro's in progress.

good luck and be safe. I'd be best to get some junk yard headlights if you could.

Better safe than sorry.
