Clunk noise from front wheels side
Clunk noise from front wheels side
The noise is somehow related to car turning. Sometime after I make a turn, the clunking noise will come up during the turn and going over bumps afterwards. I park the car and push down the front side hood, I can hear this clunking noise clearly with every up and down motion. It doesn't sound from the strut. It's more like where ball joints are, but I can't pinpoint the noise, as I have to be in a standing postion to push the front down to make the noise. Will a bad point make such noise when the car is parked? Any suggstion will be appreciated. Thank you.
Edit: After asking my wife to listen to the noise, it seems from the top of the strut. So maybe is the strut mount or bearing or something? Which part can cause this clunk, clunk noise?

both of my strut bearings are busted and I get the same knocking noise when turning, going over speed bumps, driving super slow, and parked when I push down hard enough. I can grease them up and the sound goes away for a couple months. Are you lowered?
Mine made the same noise (I think) for a while, then stopped.
Now it's doing it again - all the time.
Usually when I make a turn or hit a bump.
I thought it might be worn out bushings.
Whatever it is, it doesn't seem to affect handling.
I've got to get it into the shop, but I don't know when I'll be able to do that.
Time for oil change and to swap winter wheels/tires for the summer set.
Do let us know what you find out.

Seems you guys are having similar problems. First of all, I haven't got a shop to check out yet. Based on the reading here, I am ordering front strut mounts (they come with bearings), and will have them put it in a shop tomorrow. It's not something I think I could do myself. I listened carefully when the front end was pushed down from side, and I can hear the noise from the top of the strut. That's part of the reason I am betting on the strut mount.
Any expert on this please advise. I'd hate to put in the new parts and the problems stay. But I don't know how a shop can check a bad strut mount without taking the assembly off and apart.
I'll keep you guys posted.

I was gonna buy some KYB strut mount with bearing, and came cross this post http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=491906 stating KYB mount is no good. I am now thinking about ordering OEM ones. The price difference for one mount and bearing is about $25 Canadian. Not much.
Before swapping out parts... find whats going on!? Sounds like noise coming from up top is the strut bearing. Little 3" Diameter ring on the strut mount assembly that allow the suspension to rotate when making turns. If its toast... it will bind up every time you turn and eventually "pop" free when enough force is built up in it.
The sound coming from the lower end of the suspension may be ball-joints. Turn wheel all the way to the left or right to get your head into the wheel well. Than look at the ball-joint. If the rubber boot around it is torn/damaged in any way... you could have grease leaking out and road-grime getting in causing it to bind up and clunk when it tries to move around.

Mine was making clunking noise (lowered on Progress/Illuminas).....
Thought it had something to do with teh mounts, but over the weekend installed new LCA's (Nissan OEM) & Raxles, then got a alignment....
Drives like a new car!!!
Might want to check your ball joints & axles.
