97 max passed emissions test but failed MIL/Check Engine light

Anyone know why this to happen? There is no Check Engine Light On. I was told to drive the car for a good 30 miles and a steady speed so the computer can reset? Can i just reset the ECU? Any Help would be great.thx guys

if u failed b/c of a code but have no cel on then maybe u have the knock sensor code. check your codes to see which one you have. the procedure for doing so is in one of the stickies. you can also erase the codes yourself, takes a minute or two with a flathead screwdriver.

did you change the knock wire? That can cause problem too. I had my ks code after a new ks until I changed the wire.

Where can you get a wire and about how much does one cost?

Have you reset your ECU recently (disconnected the battery or anything)? If so, it needs a bit to drive around before it's ready to report anything. If they told you to go out and drive some more and come back, then it's probably because you didn't give the ECU enough time to monitor its signals and/or throw codes. I can't remember how long it takes, I remember it being around 200 miles after you reset the ECU.

If this is the case, just go back in a week.

you probably have no bulb in there. do you see the CEL on when you first start the car? It is more like 150 milesat a steady pace to reset the computer, or drive through a certain pattern that tests all of the systems.

yeah mizzax mentioned a good point, make sure the actual bulb is working fine before doing anything else, takes like half a microsecond

wen u turn it to the left, it should hit a stop, pause for a second, then turn to the right until it hits another stop then immediately turn to the left, wait a second, then turn to the right(clockwise), that should erase it, to check the code it would be half of those steps i just gave you...

Where can you get a KS wire?

Cause that could be your problem if your KS is new.

rotate clockwise till stops... wait 2 secs... rotate counterclock...
start the engine... wait 2 secs... turn it off and wait 5 secs so the power to ecu drops... repeat step 1... I read it somewhere in the sticky's that if u turn the car on inbetween step1 and step2 it's a complete reset... clears emission related codes...

i have the bitmap which explains this but don't have the time and energy to look for a free pic host... so if ne1 want's i can e-mail it to them and they can post it....

You can also look up your owner's manual (toward the last few pages) for drive patterns that could set your vehicle's status monitors ready. In California, you could pass smog with a maximum of two monitors not ready while all other things are OK. Many smog stations offer free re-test(s). When you go back, ask them to check the status monitors with scan tool before testing.

You dont fail because of the knock sensor. The system must have not been ready. Take it to like autozone and have them pull your codes and see if the system is ready or not.
