about the E-Brakes

i had this problem since i bought my car.. i changed the brake pad twice already. my problem is everytime i pull my e-brake it takes a long time for my car to stop(driving like 5mph). in my brothers 01 maxima it grabs the tire fast. how can i make it like as soon as i pull the e-brake car stops?

If your e-brake is out of adjustment, there is an adjustment bolt under the e-brake handle that allows you to tighten/loosen the amount of force it takes to put pressure on the rear pads.

i did the tighten the bolt. but it only makes the ebrake go up a lil which is great cause i didnt like pulling the ebrake all the way up. but do you think i have to change my rotors?? cause i dont they have not been changed. they still factory and i got 119K on my car lmao.. brake pads are really good i changed them around 4 months ago.

you might want to see if you have a frozen caliper as well.

sorry to bring an old thread up but the question was not answered and i think i have the same problem.

I smell a very SLIGHT burning smell from the rear wheels on my 4th gen (notorious for frozen rear calipers), the front does not smell the same and they always get hotter. Its the second day in a row that i experience this. Also my parking brake feels funny, i did tighten it, but it seems weird, last year october the parking brake cable was replaced (another notorious issue with the 4th gen). I remember in the winter i set the parking brake and when going home from work it did not release until i drove for about half a 1 minute...

Now if i am right, how can i tell if thats the problem once i get the wheels off?

what needs to be replaced?

is this a job i can do myself?

i have never done work on brakes, but i have done engine work like taking off the TB and IACV to clean it, replacing o2's, PCV, and fuel filter, and replacing various fluids ect...

umm..

that thing you're pulling is a parking brake...it's not used to stop but to prevent your car from rolling downhill.

do you drive downhill on a regular basis??

this is not advanced braking.

this is "brakes for dummies" stuff.....

you have three possibilities:
1. your ebrake is out of adjustment. Adjust it.
2. the cable is seized/snagged. Check it.
3. the caliper piston is frozen/seized. This is a common problem. Get a new one or rebuild it.

and yes, you can do all of these things yourself. Invest in a Haynes or Chilton's manual.....they are very good with how-tos for simple things like this.
