Exhaust in my hood?!

There were two things I'm wondering, if you heard a sound, similar to that of your muffler coming from the passenger side of your engine bay, what would you think of?

Sounded kind of like a muffler in water, a real wet, bubbly, stuttering sound. Followed by an intense smell of fuel. And while it was doing it, out of nowhere it revved itself to 1500rpm's which stopped the sound and it sounded normal when it did that, then 1000rpm's and then idled

Also, what makes it do that? Rev up by itself and then decrease in increments

Its the best I could do =/ If I had a recorder handy when the problem cropped up i would have recorded it, unfortunately its too intermittent and I don't have a recorder on my at all times

But I have a guy at the nissan dealership that's helping with the problem, he/you might be on here? Flemington Nissan?
