yeh clear coat also. use spray can. and make sure to paint the edges and around the edges...to prevent pealing. you dont need special paint cause it doesnt get hot enough so any will do. I like duplicolor a lot...always worked for me real well.

clean and prep what your going to spray. apply multiple thin coats instead of one thick heavy one. do a coat, wait a few minutes let the paint start to dry, do another, let it dry, do this for about 4 coats. then let it dry a little bit again and do like 3 coats of clear, letting it sit for a few minutes between coats. 3 or so coats should be fine. more if you want its up to you

Hey guys, I've started to paint my vavle cover today, and its lookin preaty sweet. I'll go through the steps for ya just to let ya know.

1.) Remove your valve cover (Easy Right)
2.) Sand off your stock paint. (i used 220 grit, keep from scuffing to deep)
3.) Wash with dish detergent, and MAKE SURE ITS COMPLETELY DRY AND CLEAN.
4.) Mask off any part you don't want painted (two tone only)
5.) Choose you paint wisely (i'm using Duplacolor Ceramic paint to stand up to the heat.)
6.) Start off with a light coat covering everything. Use even long strokes on all coats. let it dry for about 10 min. then repeat for second coat.
7.) for your third coat lay it on kinda thick to get good coverge.
8.) let it dry for about 5 hours then remove masking.
9.) now mask off unpainted area and repeat steps 6 and 7. (or you can hand paint ceramic paint on letters or any other area)
10.) now let it dry for a good week for paint to cure completely. you can reinstall it after about 5 hours but be carefull not to wipe or let to much dirt get on it.

you can do this with anything metal or plastic

PRESTO you have a Preaty new Valve cover right?

I can post some pics of my cover when its done

Hope this helps man, and good luck.

Sorry the cover is dirty, but you get the point.

take out the 4 bolts, its a plastic piece so u dont NEED to sand it but always better to (400 grit) and paint away!!!

wasn't there another thread on this? You should sand with light grit at least so the paint sticks. I always clean and prime it but you don't have to. Do light coats as was said and clear it for protection. Just how I paint things. Here's my old one:
