VE auto speed sensor repair

Has anyone here ever successfully repaired a VE Auto speed sensor?

Mine has been acting up for a while, will drop to 0 occasionally, stay for a few miles and hop back up later. I noticed it mostly happens during or after rain, so it is probably a voltage leak issue on the harness or nearby due to 14 years of dirty existence.

The price for a new one is fairly unreasonable ($137 at Courtesy), and a used one is likely to have similar or other issues. I want to remove it, clean it up, and hopefully achieve better electrical contact. Has there been much success with this, or do most people just replace it?

I have a barely used one for a VE-5spd. I bought mine from Courtesy and ended replacing my manual tranny which had a working one, so I didn't need it. I can sell it for a little lower than the price of a new one.

Have you pulled the sensor from the tranny and checked the pinion screw to see if the threads are okay?

I'll pull it either this weekend, or in a few weeks when I plan to do some other work on it.

I assume the sensor was for your 92? Apparently only 92-94 speed sensors are compatible between 5spd and auto.

Come to think of it, I don't think the 5spd and auto are the same sensors. I had ordered one for my 92 from PartsAmerica and the end of it where the pinion goes was too short for the pinion. Had to return it. Good luck and hope yours is a simple fix. I had to rewire directly from my speed sensor to my gauge cluster b/c the wire got fried somehow.
