29K, bye bye Tranny

2004 MAXIMA 6spd, 29K

Well I had a splendid Memorial Weekend....NOT
Friday I noticed I was leaking excessive tranny fluid.
Took it to the shop the same day, the mechanic replaced the seals on the axels.
4 hours later, a bigger puddle of tranny fluid. Had a friend that worked at a Maxima dealer ship come by the shop, checked it out, and took the tranny out, and yup it was to ****s, the bearing where the axle goes was shot, moving all over the place which is why the tranny oil leaked. Anyway the shop I go to is an auto body shop, fixes hit cars, rebuilds totaled cars. We went in the back and he had a 04 6spd, with 26k that was pretty much taken apart, took it out and put it in my maxima on Saturday and it seems to going good so far....
By the way the mechanic told me it was from rough starts and hops. I dono i still think thats kinda gay, i have several friends with maxima's and never heard of a tranny go....but anyway the whole replacement only cost me labor which was 400$ so i cant complain.

Maybe it's a crankshaft position sensor? All joking aside, I'm sorry to hear it, man. That sucks, no doubt.

holly shiet! As much as that sucks, you got it good! A "new" trans for only $400, and done within a matter of days?!

the dude changed the tranny on saturday he started around 9sih i picked it up at 3pm and it was ready to go. so i cant complain, plus 400$ is good. If I took this to the stealership, I don't even want to know how much it would cost me.

Damn not bad, $400 bucks for an almost brand new tranny. Like you said, the stealership would probably had tried to rape you lovely.

Exactly. If you woulda gone to the dealership you probably would have gotten a brand new tranny for free.

I would have thought the same thing regarding your warranty. How about recooping some of that $400 by filing with Nissan. You might not see any of it, but it's worth a try, considering Nissan didn't have to pay to drop a new tranny in your car.

Wouldn't this have been taken care of under warranty?

With Nissan there is the risk of not having your car for a long time and also having then screw something up and claim it wasn't their fault. IMO, you had the best option done and for a cheap price

I don't agree with this. Not every nissan dealership service dept are incompetent. Just find one that doesn't suck.

Dohhhhhh!!!!

I feel bad that your tranny died but you compounded your problems by not fixing it under the warranty. You would have had a new warranted tranny and a free loaner while they fixed your car and now your pockets are $400 lighter. Lesson learned.

Late.

If he has any aftermarket parts then the warranty gets cancelled out... wheels... none OEM filter.... anything not nissan and the warranty gets cancelled automatically..... unless all the parts are placed back in.... any work not done by nissan also cancells the warranty.... If your car is totally stock then yeah go for it ... warranty it...

Not true^^^^

Under Magnuson Moss vs. Sema, They have to prove a DIRECT link to the problem at hand, with a connection to an aftermarket part. They can't -by law- just deny a claim!

I had the tranny replaced (at my local Ford dealership) on my mustang when some of the synchros went out, all covered under warranty. The mods in my sig were the same when I took it in

Never hurts to try and they have to prove that your mods caused the problem.

Just not so. An old wives tale. Anyone can do the maintance work, just must keep record. I think he could have gotten a dealership to replace the tranny.

While djfris should have pursued the warranty option when his trannie went out, you guys are missing the big improvement that he did on his Max. He replaced the auto trannie that went bad with a 6-speed manual trannie with very few miles on it. What a big improvement IMHO !

He said it was an 04 6sp with 29K miles, and replaced it with an 04 6 spd with 26k miles.

You are correct. I neglected to read the "headline" that he had above his message.

sounds a little like the dealer trying to take advantage of someone "young and dumb" (no offense) ... go in there knowing your stuff and angry, and they'll do you right.

It's funny that you say that because today I went into the parts department and it was some other dush that tried proving me wrong on something that was totally wrong. I snapped one of my screws that hold the head-lamp in lol and to take it out I needed to break the little retainer or bracket that allowed the screw to go into it. The guy asked me if it's HID or not and I'm like there's no difference except for the bulbs and ballast, and this is his reply "there's a bigger difference than you think," and I was like and I'm not retarded because I've had both lamps, so don't give me that shiet!

ya, a little off topic, but I just had to share that with you guys

Calm down with this envy crap. It's not like I've never seen a 6th gener in the 5th gen forums ripping on people. I like the 6th gen, chernmax's "red heat" is one of the sickest maximas I have ever seen. I would kill for that car, but dont tell me that you've never seen a 5.5 or 4th gen car that doesnt hit a soft spot with you guys. Ok, sorry for chiming in....

Again, this isn't a recent discovery! I personally haven't bashed any other generational ride. Look around my nearsighted one, you'll see this envy and slamming does lean towards 6th gens......If you are bothered by this, perhaps you should ask if there is truth to what I say (and others that are also sick of it).
Also, not really your place to tell me to calm down my precious little one!

Back to attacking again? I thought you'd moved past this.

You're good at taking things out of context. I expected more of you! You outta run for a political party.

The link, for the accurate record was dealt with in a pm.

I don't care how it's dealt with. I am just tired of seeing you defend the 'almighty' 6th gen like it actually matters. If someone doesn't like your car, let them. I know a lot of people that don't like mine and I don't go out of my way to try and convince them it's the best car in the world, because it's not.

Like you've seen me try to convince people that my car is the best? That's a reach Sweetie!

Most attacked generation on this site.....face it. Funny you're defending your actions much the same way I defend the 6thgen. It's acceptable for you to voice your opinion but not others? Refreshing, it really is..... Tired if seeing me defend the 6th gen? Did you look what generation you walked into, if this irks you so much then stay out.....

k you guys = teh loss

Anyways, if you have the receipt, the dealer SHOULD pay for the costs since the car is under warranty.
Aftermarket parts DO NOT VOID the warranty unless they can be proven to cause the "damage." There is a nice link on this in the 4th or 5th gen stickies(i never browsed the 6th gen stickies but it might be in there as well)
