auto tranny shift lock thingy broken

so the same day I replace the front passenger window regulator, the thing that unlocks the shifter lever fail to unlock it when I step on the brakes. Now I have to take the car out of park with two hands (one is used to push down the shifter lock button, and the other to press the button on side of shifter to take out of park.)

which fuse operates this locking device? anyone else have this problem? where is the soleniod that controls this (obviously under the consol somewhere)

91 max 207,000mi and counting

thanks in advance

I have a maybe semi-related problem. I have a 93 Maxima GXE with automatic transmission. When I shift into "Drive" from "Neutral", it doesn't 'click' in at all--it stays in N. I have to push it a little past the "D" marker and then the transmission shifts into drive. This isn't a problem with the shift lock is it ? (I'm just checking to make sure I'm not missing something simple) Does anybody know what's going on, or will I need to be rebuilding my transmission soon ?

yours sounds like a shifter bushing issue

on the other shifter bushing: the one that connects the shifter arm to the tranny. Is that accessible from in the car? I figured it wouldn't be, but it can't hurt checking since it sounds like it could save some time if it was.

So I asked what fuse controlled this function. then I notice on another post that the same circuit operates the brake lights. turns out I have had no brake lights for like two weeks. Anyway put new fuse in and it blows. so I'm thinkin fuggin A. I get a schematic from a buddy of mine and go to troubleshooting (helps out having an electrical degree) any way turns out to be a brake light bulb. The two posts (on the bulb) have corroded together creating a short. New bulb problem fixed. And to think that I bought $25 dollars worth of bulbs and fuses. I returned the unused bulbs so like 12 bucks all together not bad coulda been worse

Check that it the shifter isn't pulling on some wiring like maybe the light or something else. Maybe it is catching a wire when you pull it that far back.

As for the shift lock mine did something odd the other day. I was sitting in the drive-through waiting for my order. They were taking FOREVER so I decided to pop off the trim around the shifter to see what kind of bulb was in there (thinking about a color change). I pulled out the bulb and socket still attached to the wire and everything. I got back to work and could not get it into park without overriding it. Once I popped the bulb back into place under the shifter it worked perfectly and has since. Odd...

You cannot access the shifter arm bushing from inside the car. You can only access it from under the car. Make sure you also replace the plastic bushing at the transmission, which is easily accessable from above with the hood open. This one doesn't wear out like the other, but you may as well do both while you are at it so that you know the whole linkage is secure. If I remember correctly, both bushing were under $6 total at the Nissan dealer.
