download/copy it from the FSM or Haynes and store it in your glovebox in case you ever need it.

Team effort -> Autozone engine degreaser and the local DIY spray-and-wash, cheap and effective.

I used the local DIY car wash for the high pressure and leave the gunk in their drain/sewer. Do what you want to do, but I left my engine running the whole time. Take some de-greaser if your car wash does not have engine cleaner setting. Afterwards, my engine looked great and I don't get so greasy working on it now.

gunk = insulation, during winter = good, during summer = bad

besides there's nothing wrong with having a clean engine bay

When my cousin and I washed the engine, it was left running also.

With the engine cleaners do you just spray it on and let it drip, or do you have to scrub?

if its semi dirty, just let it sit, spray, wipe

for the really dirty caked on ones, scrubing will help a lot

Most engine degreasers tell you to apply while engine is warm. So I drive my happy @$$ to the DIY spot and then start the process. I would say the engine is off for about 5 minutes. I just make sure to cover and/ or stay away from electronics such as alternator and starter, as well as fuse panels. MAF, and the air filter. Better safe then sorry. It may/ may not hurt them, but I don't exactly have the money to just throw into it if it does.

If its extra nasty, I use the toilet brush...(I'm sorry, image still in my head from prior post. The nasty, brush at the DIY wash that you don't dare use on the exterior of your car) I spray it off, then use it to scrub my underhood, intake manifold, and engine bay just for a little extra cleaning after I apply the degreaser.

Then after I finish, I use the spray wax on the underhood and other painted parts (my block, heads, and valve cover are all painted, as well as inner fenders). Let it run for a couple minute to let the heat/ steam finish cleaning/ dry. Then I apply some type of silicone shiner (interior or tire) on the hoses and plastics. I know this last part is a little obsessive, but oh well. I can't stand a dirty engine bay, or car for that matter.

The upside of this is you dont have to clean up your mess, the down side is if the DIY spent some real money on their system and upgraded to a recycling system of the water, you just f'ed up a few cars. But how can you tell. I just do mine at the edge of my driveway and the street and let it all go into the city sewer system.

Simple green, armor all (for the finish) and I also let my engine run.
