suicide trunk

anyone buy this suicide (flip flop) trunk kit off of ebay. (link). imo this is a cheap cool visual mod so im wondering if this little kit is alright. also im wondering if ppl have just gone to a hardware store to get parts as it sorta looks like its just a couple extra screws and hinges

btw i see that ebay link uses araffio's cardomain pics

edit: also anyone already with this mod, (i know lot do) could you guys post pictures of where the hinges are attached.

thanks

ok i googled this a bit and see its pretty easy by just going to a hardware store and buying hinges and screws. still id like to see upclose pics of the added hardware if anyone has them. also something i didnt read about that im gonna do is add a cable to each side to limit the trunk from 'flip flopping' more than what is parallel (sorta like a tailgate on a truck). im gonna do this tomorrow when i have time and ill update.

the only thing that would justify that is if you have (or plan to put) subs in your trunk, for anything else it makes the trunk very obstructive.

There was a guy at the meet last summer with it that I saw. What I would do would be to remove the bars that hold it from the lid, then re-attach them with hinges. like so.

just make sure that the hinges screw on in front of the center of gravity of the trunk. Since there's a big heavy part at the back of the trunk, it shouldn't be too hard, but there's a slight chance you may have to cut the bars a bit. (this is all from just looking at my 4gen trunk, not from actually trying it, it's very likeily that you don't need to shorten anything)

Basically if the center of gravity is in front of the hinges, it will function like the normal trunk. if it's behind the hinges, it will function as pictured. Of course, the truly ingenious could rig up something whereby inserting a pin would give you a trunk that functions like stock, and removing it would make it function as pictured. All it would take would be a pair of L-brackets, some sort of pin, and a hole in the trunk support bar.

^^^^ya thats what i was thinking about doing with the steel cable.

found a site with really good pics done on a civic. shows how to use latches to lock it in place.

http://www.bulletmotorsports.net/flipfloptrunk.htm

also i was thinking about maybe possible buying a hydraulic shock thing (like to hold up the hood) for $25 at autozone and use that somehow to flip it up and down without needing a latch. idk about that tho. just an idea

I wouldn't try using it without the stock latch. I wouldn't want that much unsecured hinged weight in the back of my car. You could hit a bump and have the trunk fly open or at the very least rattle if it's just held in by a shock and not by the latch. It's easy enough to open it with either the keyless entry fob, or the button on the door, or the keyhole in the trunk.

This mod's sooo 4years ago. All the showcars had this. It's as played out as my rims.

Anyways, 1 thing to check for is the seals to be sure that no water gets in when it rains or when u go through a pressure washer. I dunno what design they're using in the ebay auction. You're better off buying the parts yourself and doing it yourself. Good luck!

rice this, rice that, you do realize its a Nissan right. yeah 4 door and all that and pretty much eveyone of us does them up sleek and I love that, but its not a domestic, which is what everyone makes it sound like. Anyways I think its a total waste, even if you have a sick trunk setup, I wouldn't do it too cheap looking. just my 2 cents
