Raced a 5-oh
well...a mustang gt 5.0...he had a superchip and exhaust (looked stock, but we asked him after the race)
i had a full tank of gas (120 lbs.), system (100 lbs.) and a friend (150 lbs.)...he was by himself w/ no system...so i already had a 370 lb. disadvantage...we raced 3 times, once from a roll starting around 70mph (sucked for me, bottom of 3rd gear)...surprisingly i only lost by 2 cars upto 120mph (1 car gap in between the cars)...we then got stopped at a light and he murdered me off the line (advantages of having a stick)...so off the line upto 130mph, he had a good 6 cars on me...then we got to a twisty section of roads and i killed him there...wasn't even a contest...he had to slow down to 100 or so while i kept steady at 130 (i had never taken those turns over 110 before, but w/ my rsb i stayed in my lane the entire time) and at his speed, he was swerving into 2 lanes...we then pulled upto another light (my brakes smelled like a$$ from the 130 to 0 stop i had to do...wasn't too pleased w/ my brakes...so anyways, we pulled up, he told me what he had and complemented me on my car and he said he had a blower coming soon...i said i had a supra coming soon...he turned and we went our seperate ways...i did a lot better than i expected...my friend (that was with me) said a superchip is supposed to add 40hp on 5.0's...this was a 94 5.0, btw...he said he runs a 13.9 in the 1/4

One thing I don't understand is:
- why you race with someone in your car??
- why you race with a full tank of gas??
- why you race with all you subs etc??
Sometimes you gotta just say "NO". With so many excuses and/or factors it is better to wait for another day or not bother at all. The older Vanilla Ice style 5.0 stock are not that fast (for a V8 mustang) and even with basic mods might have problem with a modded 5spd Max especially on the highway. If you running in the mid 15's without all your factors listed above then don't expect to run even let alone beat one. I know you get all pumped up because a crappy old 5.0 wants to race but it ain't really worth it especially with all the factors you mentioned.

Chips are way overrated!
yeah...i kinda made the topic an attention grabber so people would come in and look...i was thinking a cop when i wrote it
phatguy...this is not the fast and the furious where you can get prepped before every race...i personally will only race at night and 90% of the time, i have someone with me...it just so happens that i filled up my gas tank earlier that day and that i put my sytem back into the car that day (had taken it out for a race w/ a gtp, but the guy didn't call back)...if i were to only race when i had an empty tank of gas without my system in the car while by myself, i might get into 1 race a month...a race is a race...it doesn't bother me that i lost...i am just reporting what happened...i usually only get into races when i'm out cruising around and who cruises by themeselves?
i run the same 1/4 mile times as 5spd max's but they obviously get a better launch so i guess i catch them at the end (i haven't raced one head to head yet, just timeslips from the same night)...but of course i go to the track without all of this extra weight in my car...with all this weight i felt my low end was very slow and the stang killed me on the launch every time
it was a 94 which means the last body style (upto 98) but with taillights that go from left to right rather than taillights that go up and down...not the old boxy 5.0's

Ah ok I thought the 1994 Stang had a 4.6L engine? I know very little about mustangs so I guess it changed to the smaller engine in a later year? Aren't those the slowest V8 mustangs made in years (or ever)? I still don't think that race was worth it with all the factors involved. And there is no way your car can hang with a 5spd Max with the same mods as you or even if the 5spd had a y-pipe and intake especially after second gear...IMO.
You got nads to go up against a Stang though with a full tank of gas, a passenger, and subs etc..

Raced a 5.0
87-93 5.0 Mustangs with 5sp can easily dip into the 13's with nothing but an air filter, advanced timing and decent driving, you think that is slow? The automatics were dogs with 2.73 gears, mid 15's in the qtr. 94-96 mustangs had a 5.0 but 200 or so more pounds. 97-98 had the 4.6 with 215hp, they were the slowest mustangs in years. My wife has a 89 5.0 with no mods and auto, I can take her from a stop, but she can take me from a roll (I have a 2000 GXE 5sp). I also have another 89 5.0 auto with a Kenne Bell supercharger and little else that goes 12.5 at 110. I am taking my Maxima to the track 8/11 to see what it will do.

I don't think its worth to race a Mustang 5.0 with all the stuff you had...its just plain and simple...you are abusing your car...130-0(da*n), accelerating and braking its just bad for your car.. but oh well its your choice...maybe you'll get him next time without all your stuff..

Re: Raced a 5.0
Nope ever said the 5.0 from 87-93 is slow. Just think they are cheap POS and guys driving them will drive them extremely hard...those things are scary on the highway if you hit a bump. I know very little about Mustangs though. If you put a y-pipe and intake on your car you could easily pull even with stock mustang 87-98 in third, fourth and fifth. New ones on the other hand would require an SC.
I just don't think it is worth racing a 10 year old POS that gets the hell driven out of it with a $25K+ 4 door luxury sports sedan.

Re: Re: Raced a 5.0
If you have a fair amount of mods, and a 5spd, you very well could stay with a stock 5.0 once moving, but the problem is, you rarely ever see a stock 5.0, nearly everyone is modified, it is definately a cheap car to modify.
I have sticker shock at how expensive everything is for the Maxima. $180+ for a stillen intake?? All it is is a conical filter with a chrome cap. I could put a cone filter on my mustang for $40.
This car could get quite expensive!!
All I have so far is a k&n panel. What would your next mod be?? I don't want to void the warranty!!
Does it benefit from disconnecting the air silencer?
Thanks
Ray

Put a y-pipe on for sure and do an OSCAI. (be sure to reset your ECU when done :-) You will notice a massive difference especially in 3rd-5th. I wouldn't bother with a RT cat or catback (more bark but very lil bite). A short shifter is nice as well and you will enjoy driving your car alot more. Don't forget about the fstb/rsb and that should do you for a while.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Raced a 5.0
OSCAI will be easy and cost almost nothing since you already have a K&N installed so that is your best bet for sure. Y-pipe you can do yourself but I paid $60 (one hour labour) and had it done at a local exhaust shop. The Y is before the main cat and removes pre cat when you upgrade. If you keep you main cat and catback I think you should be ok with it being legal. With oscai and Y-pipe and everythng else stock it won't be much louder either but you will get more punch for sure no question.

i said my car is even w/ a 5spd stock...not a 5spd w/ the same mods...adam, don't believe me? alex (in tuscon) ran a 15.5 in 70 degree weather and i did also (w/ about 1/4 tank of gas) while justin (who we know is a really fast shifter...chirped 2nd and 3rd ON TAPE) ran a 15.5 in 90 degree weather while i ran a 15.6...i want to race a 5spd though because i know it will take me off the line but i catch upto it because of my high end
Huh? late 80's 5.0's run 13's. My friend had a LX hatchback 5.0 that ran 13.8, stock. What's Vanilla Ice sytle?

2000 SE, correct the Chip does not add anything near 40HP, Maybe 8Hp, however, you also can't use that chip with NOS, unless you want to blow your $hit up. Its advances your timing, and other setting you would not want with NOS.
Furthermore, the 5.0L is one of the best Ford V8s to go fast in with little money in mods, its not one of the slowest.

My launch was recommended from someone here, I roll out from about 4500rpm (slipping the clutch out)!
One thing about Mustangs
As one said, most Mustangs are modded. More oft than not, you are going to find many 'Stangs with 3.55s or 3.73s. I ran against a LX 5.0 with a 3.73 and got his azz with my old Caprice (305, 4bbl) because the 3.73 is not going to give you any midrange or top end and I got him in the midrange.

waahhh? i don't know about in Arizona, but autos here do not run as fast as 5spds here(well, unless they are NOSed...no disrespect to auto owners..
)..hehe...

oh, yeah, the chip thing...unless you are running forced induction engine set-up, the chip does very very little...

I meant to ask you, why don't you consider a 300zx TT in your new car search? You could stay with nissan quality and I really like those cars, pretty quick too.

oh, yeah, the chip thing...unless you are running forced induction engine set-up, the chip does very very little...
waahhh? i don't know about in Arizona, but autos here do not run as fast as 5spds here(well, unless they are NOSed...no disrespect to auto owners..
)..hehe...

I am also thinking that when I go to the track after my y-pipe, I want to have a set of 15" aluminum wheels run with. I might just have to by some and put a low pro on it to increase my gear ratio for the run.

damn adam, why are you so ****ed at me all of a sudden? everthing you're saying has a negative connotation
anyways, i looked at a 300zx, but repairs are supposed to be very expensive (often)...i like the look of a 300zx, but i haven't driven one yet...nissan has really been getting on my nerves as far as customer service etc...if the new z was coming out any sooner, i might consider it (i don't remember how much they said it costs, though)...the 300zx is a quick little car and has a good amount of aftermarket support, but when it comes down to it, a 300zx isn't supposed to be the most reliable car, and i would rather have every car on my list in front of one
