Adjust trunk???

My 99 GLE has a rattle coming from the trunk area only over sharp impacts . I discovered that the little clip that holds then torsion rods in place was broken and replaced it and it did improve it but it still happens occasionally. It's hard to know for sure without getting into the trunk while someone drives but it seems to be either the trunk itself moving or the bracket that holds the rods /rods rattling.

Anyone know how I can adjust the rods or get the trunk to close more securely (tighten it down) to see if that fixes the issue? I've tried the search and come up empty.

Thanks

Nope no spoiler.

Its is for sure nothing outside. I'm fairly certain its to do with the trunk lid itself or those stupid torsion rods/brackets.

Adjust the latch via two 10mm (I think?) bolts on the back wall of the trunk, not the lid itself but at the bottom...You will see it.

Loosen it and lower it as low as possible. Be sure the two bolts remain fairly perpendicular to the ground so the trunk still closes evenly, hope this helps

i don't think the rods are adjustable short of bending, and without knowing whats wrong that wouldn't work. adjust the latch like above, or the lid itself. check out your weather stripping too.

I adjusted the latch. How do you adjust the lid itself? Are their bolts?

The car is 8 years old so the weather stripping may have lost some of its cushioning I'll take a closer look.

I had rattles coming from the rear of the car that drove me nuts for months. Turned out to be the headliner. One of the clips came off.

Just go back there and gently tap on the headliner. You'll hear it, if one of the clips is loosed or came off all together.

Try having someone poke around, push on things, etc...while driving. Maybe not in the trunk(unless you used a pole, or something through the seat opening), but that will give you an idea of where/what it might be. Also, check your speaker covers, and the light switch cover.

you can adjust the trunk via 4 10mm bolts on the bottom side of the lid, my cars been in pices so long i forget if theres something covering it, probably a carpeted liner.
