$595 a reasonable price for a custom exhaust??

Hey guys! I just need a few quick opinions. I have a Cattman y-pipe and Magnaflow cat. NOT on the car, yet. I was going to install these last weekend until I noticed my whole system is original and rusted to hell. Holes all over the place. Anyway, my local muffler shop (Mufflex in Trenton for the locals) wants $595 to install the Y, weld the cat and fabricate a new custom catback system including a resonator and Magnaflow muffler. Is this a good deal? Average? Too much?
Let me know cause if its a good deal, Im having it done tomorrow.
Thanks!!

The $220 at Miankee...did they give you a brand name muffler? Was it 2.5" piping? That price sounds on par with Mufflex because they are doing the Y and cat also plus a resonator and muffler.
Anybody else have an opinion on this? I mean a Greddy SP2 costs $525 shipped.

If it is mandrel bent and a perforated core resonator it is not a bad deal at all.

I guess that still sounds on par, then. They are including a muffler, resonator, b-pipe plus my y-pipe and cat install (universal cat needs welding).
Ill make sure they are mandrel bends and a perforated core resonator. Then $595 will be justified, I suppose.
If anybody else thinks otherwise...speak up!

just a suggestion, but why don't you find out how much just the install would cost. its easy labor, so it shouldn't be much. then grab a cm exhaust out of the group deal section for the same price as what you are spendin on a custom.

The Minake here in MD bent my dad up a ypipe and a 2.5inch catback and welded on his borla muffler (which we provided) for 400. So yea i would say its a pretty reasonable price

Well, thats what I was thinking. They said it was about a 1.5 hr job. Maybe without the bending of custom pipes if I supplied my own catback, it'll be an hour. So, thats about $90 labor. A Greddy runs about $525. If I got a prefabbed one and had them install it (I need them to install because of the welding around the Y and cat), it would cost me a little over $600. I guess thats about the same, I might as well go cutom and have piece of mind that it'll fit perfectly.

Damnit. Looks like $595 it is. Btw, I dont know why but I would much rather bring my Max to a reputable, privately owned muffler shop and not Minakee.

I paid $650 or so just for all the parts including headers (not custom - I did the install myself). Since you already have two of the parts (Y-Pipe and Cat) you should only be paying them around $350 or so in my opinion.

You paid $650 for just parts!? My used y pipe n cat where $300 alone. What brand? I am ok around a shop but I dont weld =[ so Im gonna have them do the install. Thats not where the bulk of the cost is coming from, anyway. Labor seems to be in the $120 range (1.5 hrs). That means Im getting a custom catback for about $480.

SS Auto Chrome Headers and Y-Pipe on EBay
Warpspeed High-Flow Converter on EBay
Budget B-Pipe with Resonator from LSS Exhaust in Canada
OEM Muffler from EBay

I did my entire exhaust over with brand new parts and gaskets. I spent like $700 total for the entire job (I did the install myself since I have a car lift in my garage lol).

Soooooo jealous!
Sounds like im in the right ballpark. If I add the cost of what I bought (cattman y, magnaflow cat), plus a custom catback with resonator and magnaflow muffler plus all installation....Im coming too $900. I suppose thats not too too bad.

man i'm not sure your making the right decision. i've never heard of a cattman cat-back not fitting, whereas i have seen custom systems that fit awfully. also if bring a prefab your labor should go way down. might cost a lil more, but consider over-all quality, material quality, fitment, etc, and i say do it right the first time. guess it all comes down to your opinion of muffler shops.

The are def a reputable shop. They did a custom dual exhaust for me back in the day on my 84 olds. Here is their site: http://www.mufflex-performance.com/
Thats one of the reasons Im trying to justify it. I know these guys are good. If I buy a Cattman or aftermarket now, Im still putting up $600 plus the cost of the install. I will def make sure they use mandrel bending, though. Lastly, as for fitment, if it doesnt fit properly, I can ***** and have them fix it for free. lol

I'd let them do it. It looks like they do mandrel bends.

And how can a custom fit exhaust not fit right? Why would you leave the shop if they didn't make it fit right?

Just ask them all the specs, what resonator(perforated?), what muffler?, mandrel bends?

Since you live in PA, all you exhaust bolts are prob rusted to hell so it would be near impossible for a at home mechanic to change it all out.

I paid 260 for my bpipe and 50 for my muffler. Then about 80-120 for installation. If not more since I have changed my muffler so many times.

Yea...I was gonna do the Y pipe myself. Got under there and it was a baaaad scene. Rust doesnt even begin to explain. I def didnt have the right tools nor do I have welding abilities.
What kind of muffler did you use for $50? The shop Im going to is a magnaflow dealer and I think thats all they stock. Im sure they could order anything I want but I think ill just have them make a nice long resonator to cut the sound and that should be cool.

I would advise you NOT to get a magnaflow muffler, their resonators are fine but I think their mufflers are loud and annoying. I had the Dynomax superturbo 17748 and it sounded very nice but droned around 2000, now I have the 5th gen muffler and it is silent like stock. If you want to hear the exhaust note the dynomax should be fine.

Hmmm...when I get there tomorrow, I'll see what else they can do as for the muff. A lil growl or something is always fun but I dont wanna annoy all my neighbors at 2am when I come home or leave early for work. The Borla on my Jetta sounded amazing. Ill see if they can get one of those. If not, I'll go dynomax, if not that...I'll prolly just say, eff it, and go with magnaflow. lol

I got the Dynomax 17748 originally when I was doing my overhaul but ended up sending it back because the one I got (off some ebay seller) didn't have ANY of the hangers welded onto it. Last time I welded hangers to a muffler...my muffler was ****-eyed lol. So I sent it back and got an OEM 4th gen one.

The price isnt bad but heres what I think...
If your gonne spend about $600, why not just get the Greddy SP2. You know how those sound since theres tons of sound clips so you do not have to fear about how it will sound. Also, not to say this shop doesnt do good work, but you know greddy has excellent quality. I've had mine on over a year and it still looks nearly brand new. Tho the sp2 does have a tad of fitment issues that arnt too major but still there (hanging b-pipe, tip sticks out past bumper on mine too a tad.) So going custom might solve those problems but you never know either. Id go with the sp2 but its your money and my opinion.
If you really wanna save why not buy a used sp2? They are stainless steel not like they rust.

Thanks, for the input!! I def looked into that first and formost. The probs I had with that is:
-Greddy doesnt have any SP2's at the moment. I searched everywhere and no shops have them in stock. Those ebay conmen wont give me a definate answer so I would have to wait for who knows how long to get my hands on one.
-The fitment. That is gonna be an issue cause I would need to have a shop do the install anyway since in my case welding will be involved. So, either way, Im paying some labor.

Tomorrow, after I get back...Im gonna let everyone know what happend. Thank you all for the feedback! These forums fkn rock!!!

I'm at the shop now on my sidekick. Lol. They are doing some kind of dual resonator to cut back on the sound of the magnaflow a lil bit. They where showing me these insane exhaust tips. Its was funny. I picked the most chill one. Its maybe a 2.5 or 3" single angle cut tip.
I need 2 oxygen sensors!! This sucks. They wanted like $180 for each ...I told them, no. I hope this doesnt effect my drivability too much. I know I can find them in the .org classifieds for $50 a pop.
Well, just thought I would update you guys. Ill let you know how it worked out later today. Anybody have any o2 sensors for sale? Lol
