how far are you wanting to go?

the VG block has been said to be able to take a 93mm overbore with no problems.
I wouldn't go past 89 on a VE unless you have a spare block to use in place of it.

Ive just been thinking about how far an ALL MOTOR n/a VE could go, isnt there a programable ECU that will work with our vtc's (similar to hondas vtech)too bad there arent more aftermarket shortblock upgrades or mods for the VE (there may be eagle H beam rods)...... or cams would be nice.

There's no cams yet. I'm going to pull my engine apart again and measure everything before I have a set ground. If you're interested (and pay up front), I've got another set of cams and I'll send them both in and have them done at the same time to save us a few bucks on a batch job.

I wouldn't worry too much about the max overbore for them. you're going to have to do custom pistons if you go anything past 87.5mm.

before that, you can use NA Z32 pistons to bump the compression to *around* 11:1. the VE's stock is 10:1 and VG30DE NA is 10.5:1. but when I put some 87.5 forged JE pistons in mine, I was getting cylinder pressures closer to 11:1..

There's quite a bit of info on my N/A buildup- including all of my trials and tribulations getting the engine running- in a thread I started in the all-motor forum.

I've wondered what the max bore size is as well. If the VE could take 89 or 90mm pistons it should displace 3.2L, also instead of getting a custom piston made you could order 90mm SR20 pistons off the shelf. All other mods will have to be custom, I bet a VG30DE IM would make another 10-15whp over a VE IM assuming you get it to fit. With the bigger cams a custom header will make the most of the upgrades.

regrind cams are a couple hundred bucks per set. not that expensive, really. keep in mind they're regrinds and not quite as good as a set of new custom-ground billets, but since you can't buy billet blanks for the VE you don't have much of a choice. also be sure to have the cams re-nitrided to regain the surface strength lost during the grinding process.

(you can, however, buy them for the VG30DE from Nissan Motorsports-- NOT NISMO. the REAL Nissan Motorsports... about $600 a set just for the billets, then you have to grind them for another few hundred $.)....

Ari, what would you end up with compression-wise on the SR pistons?
A set of custom-made JE pistons will run around $1100.. really not that bad considering what you'd get. I really wish I'd have spent the extra $400 and gone that way now.

you might as well be asking the difference between a VE and a Chevy LS1. they're COMPLETELY different engines.

Now, if you meant VE and VG, then you'd be closer on the money.

the VE uses the same bearings and connecting rods as the VG30DE and VG30DETT. (Not VG30E though- smaller wrist pin on the rods).

The oil pump is different, but the VE pump seems to be able to handle anything it's been given so far. mine is 240,000 miles old and will still pump over 100psi when the engine is cold- even with 5w20 oil.

The bottom end- other than the pistons- is good for ~400hp and 8000RPM, assuming you replace the rod bolts with ARP (They're about $60/set. buy them for the Z32 since they're the same rods)..

the rod bolts seem to be the weak link on these engines... Jeff's died, mine died, and I thienk Brad92SE's engine dies because of rod bolt failure. it's best to replace them with ARP for cheap insurance against blowing a $3000 engine build.

so what kind of specs are we looking at for the reground cams. Also, are there any valvetrain parts we can upgrade like springs, retainers, rockers.

you can always upgrade, but it's a matter of how much you want to spend because it has to be custom made.

specs on reground cams will depend on what the clearances in the engine are. I'm going to have to pull mine apart and measure the p-v clearances with the custom pistons.

JWT ECU right now. having major problems with it too. even with timing retarded to 13* (2* less than stock), it pings on hot days with 93 octane. grrr.

Aaron is working on some different ECU options with his VE auto. I'm going to follow in his footsteps somewhat once he has that stuff sorted.

I've been contemplating going to a Greddy EMU or going all out with an AEM EMS system as well, but that alone is worth more than the whole car.

Right now I don't have time to do anything but drive it. once I get BlehmCo sold and a bit more free time (and hopefully liquid cash with the business sale), I will get back to work on the engine.
