Well, America has had the most powerful cars, overall, for quite some time now. Must have something to do with our long, wide roads.

When I visited Europe some years ago, I remember most cars are stickshifts with smallish 4-cylinder engines. But that's what they are used to, so it is adequate for them. In the US, we are spoiled. People complain that a 222hp Maxima is underpowered, but in reality it is very powerful already.

 

thing about Europe is all those cars are 2000 lb 4bangers with turbo's.. 40% of the cars on the road have turbo's..

 

A tragic waste. We could almost have had near enough a stealth 300ZX with comfy seats by now, if Nissan had put any effort into marketing or developing them here, and if the press hadn't slagged Maximas at every opportunity.

I suppose it would have helped if more than 50 people bought them as well.

Dear God, even the "tailoring them to the European market" bit was horribly badly executed. Yes we can get a 5-speed. The bad news is that it probably weighs the same as a real Max and is punted by an overworked little 2-litre engine. At least they didn't make it so Euro it has 4 cylinders.

Don't get me wrong. It's probably a fine enough engine. It's just in the wrong place. (The right place for a 2000cc 24-valve V6 would be one of those BMW Minis...

And if you want slow, you can buy a 2 litre auto. Free calendar on the dashboard for you drag fans out there.

well if you're just looking at acceleration and top speed then yes, the UK cars are pretty horrible.

You guys have to realize that different things are important in cars in different markets such as the UK. In Europe, fuel prices are very easily 3X what they are in the US - we're "spoiled" with very low fuel prices compared to the rest of the world.

If you were paying $6/gal for gas in the UK would you REALLY want to be driving a car that can barely break into the high-20's mpg if you light foot it?? err...I think not.

If you look on that list, a great majority of those cars are getting 30, 40, or even 50 mpg - much higher than the average fuel mileage in the US. And you won't see any 10 mpg Ford Excursion SUV's on there either because they're just plain and simply too damned expensive to operate with gas prices like that.

Hell, my gas bill every month is around $150-200 in my Accord V6 and I drive a lot. You may think of that as chump change and just a necessary expense, and maybe you could save $50/mo by going to a 4-cyl engine - no big deal, right?? That's the US with our nice and cheap sub-$2/gal gas prices.

Now in the UK my fuel expenditures per month would TRIPLE and now all of a sudden I'd be paying $450-600/mo on gas!! Whoa baby!! That ain't gas - that's fricken more than my car payment on my Accord!! So all of a sudden you have a very serious problem and fuel mileage and low operating costs are suddenly your primary concern instead of horsepower, 0-60, and 1/4 mile times... I would be trading in my Accord V6 like mad in exchange for a much lighter and fuel efficient 4-cyl car, and many of you guys probably would too.

So hence all of the small displacement (even diesel) 4-cyl, stick shift, lightweight cars with great gas mileage but relatively crappy (compared to USDM cars) performance over in Europe.

So you guys are making the mistake of thinking like an American when looking at European cars. Nothing wrong with that - just an observation
