Anyone know or have experience with replacing the stock clutch to a racing or double plated clutch? This stock clutch just doesn't feel like it's going to last. Thanks J

I have an ACT street clutch installed. It is the closest you can get to a racing clutch without actually getting a "racing clutch". A real racing clutch like the ACT 4-puck or 6-puck would DESTROY the maxima's tranny. It would be much too harsh. My clutch is AMAZING. The grip is incredible. I get LOTS of rubber into second and a some into third. It holds tight even when I powershift with NOS on.

Cattman I beleive. All the clutches from like '89 on are the same. About 425 for the stage 2 clutch with pressure plate.

I've already had too many problems with the clutches in my car. My stock clutch went out at 30K so I bought the centerforce stage 2 clutch from Stillen and had Nissan install it. I had it for 3 weeks and that piece of sh*t went out again. I drove like a granny for the first 500 miles like the instructions said. I got on it ONE time since it had been put in. I didn't race it at all. I was on the freeway coming up on traffic so I downshifted to 4th, went to put it back in 5th and I couldn't get it to go into gear. Nissan took it apart and said the clutch was destroyed for excessive use. Bullsh*t. Basically Nissan isn't responsible because it's not their product. We paid them 5 something in labor plus 275 for a new flywheel plus 235 for the clutch. like 1200 and we don't get any of it back. No one is even trying to step up and take responsibility for it. They all say it's the way I drive the car. I don't think the stock clutch should have went out at 30K. We fought Nissan on having it warrantied but they said we used it excessively. Screw Stillen, Screw Nissan, Screw Centerforce. The best we can hope for is Centerforce to say the clutch was bad and they'll give us a new one but we get nothing back for the installation for the first one and we have to pay for installation of the new one. Anyone else had clutch problems?

Yeah. The stock clutch went sour after 4500 (that's right 4500) miles. The found that the master cylinder was too tight and was sticking (they way it came from factory) and fortunately they replaced under warranty. I also think Pioneer had some issues with his clutch around the same mileage as you.

I also gotta agree no clutch should go out after 30,000, unless you powershift all the time or something. Hell my last car had well over 100,000 miles and the original clutch and no problems.

ACT

Go with an ACT street clutch.....BELIEVE me you won't be disappointed. Mine makes me feel like I'm going to rip the tranny right out of the car cuz it has so much grip.
Read my above post.

Almost (almost) makes me glad to have auto. Although, how DO YOU use your clutch? Do you hold the pedal down at red lights and stuff? Do you powershift all the time? I don't want to sound like nissan, but are you really taking the precautions to prevent clutch damage?

Aah... all this manual talk is making me want to drive my mom's Saab 9-3 around.... man that car's cool

Oh yeah, and good luck trying to get it fixed, sorry they gypped you so bad. maybe you could call Nissan USA for help or better customer service.

ive NEVER powershifted my car, just recently lerned what it was. and no i dont usually hold the clutch down at light it all depends. Whatever the case may be yes i raced the hell out my car with the stock clutch and got 30k out of it, installed a stage 2 centerforce and got less than 600 miles with no racing, something aint right. I need a lawyer or something.

Seriously... get one if being "right" is important to you. It sounds like you could get over $1000, but of course you'd have lawyers' fees... which sucks outright. Maybe you could consult a lawyer for free?

What is the offset on your rims? Do they rub when you turn? Are those struts with Eibachs or do you have coilovers? Thanks.

what kinda driving was 500? All street? Mix street highway?
I forgot which socal company it was, but they put it in my friend's Altima and said "put 500 miles on there anyways you can, just go easy". My friend asks "can I drive up and down the coast on the 5 freeway till I hit 500?" Company says "Yes".
My friend did 500 freeway, then went dragging. After 2nd launch, tranny was toast. Company says "you abused it before you broke it in" and gave my friend bull even after they said "500".
Anyways...I don't know what proper break in is like...so can someone describe it?
And also, more tips like "no holding clutch at stops" cuz I didn't know that.

The 500 driving was like a grandma. I never had it go over 4K RPM's. No launching, no racing, nothing. So what ended up happening to your friend? Did he get screwed too? Anyway more tips would be helpful for me too. What does holding the clutch in at a stop do?
Thanx

I have *an* answer (maybe not the best one), but try this website (it's a TV show - I think you stand a very good chance of getting on the show **AND** you get a "superstar" lawyer for free)

http://www.powerofattorneytv.com/BeALitigant.asp

A word of advice, after watching the show, the trick to winning whatever you want on the show is respecting the judge by only answering EXACTLY the questions asked.

Thurz, you have to USE the clutch. If you just use the clutch about 4 times(to get the car into 5th gear) and then just cruise for 500 miles, you still have only used the clutch 4 times. When the makers say "500 miles", they are assuming you are going to work, crusing etc.. ie..stoplight to stoplight mixed w/ some freeway use. So in 500 miles, you would have pushed the clutch in about 200 times or so.

It's like saying you can just break in brake pads by installing them and driving on the freeway for 500 miles. If you never or almost never use the brakes, they are still new.

Company ate some of the cost cuz the guy on the phone knew he said it (only 1 week later the clutch went, so they remember my friend). Gave a $100 discount on a new clutch.
