The other night my maxima left me stranded. Basically, I have noticed it starting a little slow (the starter is tunrning over slowly) the past couple weeks. I checked the battery and it was fine. It doesnt always turn over slowly, just every once in a while. So the other night I was out, got in the car to go home and it wouldnt turn over. Had power, bright lights and everything but it wouldnt turn over. I had it towed to the dealer, they jumped in the next morning and it started right up. So I picked it up and took it home. Same thing. Starts real slow now and then if I shut if off right away it wont turn over at all. Wait a while and it will turn over slowly again. I have swapped the battery in it with one that I know is good and still have the same problem. Could it be the starter? The dealer was telling me that they get a dead spot in them but that wouldnt explain why its turning over slowly. BTW - its a 95 with 65k miles. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason

Funny you should mention this. I have 59k on my maxima and the same thing has happened. Not too often. Most of the times I have to give it a couple of tries before it works. I know the starters are weak on these cars and tend to go. I have another year on my extended warranty so I was going to wait to see what happens. Have you had your spark plugs replaced?

I had the same problem at like 70K miles, it would turn over slowly then when you turned the ignition to start, there was no starter noise. I went on doing this for like i think 5 months, but when then the starter would not work at all. What puzzles me is when you say that you took it to the dealer and they jumped it and worked fine? Sound like that in your case it can be the battery. If you're confident the battery is up to par, get it tested to make sure. Auto parts stores will do this for free. If it's not the battery, i would blame the starter.

I occasionally have the same problem with my max. I have a 96 SE with 77K miles on it. Every once in a while i have a hard time getting her to start, but then if i let her sit for a sec, then try again, it usualy turns over pretty easy. It's not so bad right now (summertime), but last winter was a real B*TCH! Im hoping to get it taken care of before this fall.

'95 Maximas are known for weak starters. However, you could also have ...
- loose/dirty electrical connections
- corrosion inside a battery cable, hidden by the plastic insulation

A starter motor will crank slowly if the brushes are worn or the bearings which support the armature are damaged.

He said they "jumped in and it started right up" not that they jumped it
