We had a pretty cool Tamparacing.com drag night at DeSoto Dragway in Bradenton, FL last night. Quite a few fast cars came out, and surprsingly most were imports. There must have been 20 Honda Civic hatchbacks out....and most were very quick running 13's or better. Temps were pretty good at around 70F as the night wore on, but the humidity was very high as usual.

We also had about 5 or so local Max's out there representing the Maxima crowd. All I can say is I feel really bad for Jerome W's clutch! That man must have made 30 runs! Jerome with his new custom exhaust and forged Team Loco wheels showed the Cali Spec's can run with the Fed Specs by posting consistent 95+ mph trap speeds. John P also came out with his new Y-pipe and Stillen intake and again confirmed the value of these mods by adding 2 mph to his trap speeds upto about 95 mph. Terry F in his mint modded out 4g was in a few heated runs with Jerome. I dont have timeslips for everyone else, but the runs were generally in the 15.0-15.3 range if I remember correctly with the 5g's turning 95 mph trap speeds and the 4g at about 93 mph. Guys who were there......post away!

I ran Mad Max a few times with decent luck. My best ET run:

R/T 0.508
60 ft 2.262
330 ft 6.276
1/8 9.534
mph 74.88
1/4 14.754
mph 94.63

Strangely enough, one of my lowest trap speeds of the night was the best ET run. Unfortunately, the engine was pretty hot for this run, so I lost some top end and had a slightly lower trap speed than usual. My best trap speed of the night was 95.38 with a cooler engine, but I didnt hook up well enough to convert this to a good ET and ran a 14.909. I also was a having a good relationship with the lights and ran quite a few 0.5xx's, (and a few 0.4xx red lights) and even a 0.425 on the Pro Tree where a 0.400 is perfect.

Overall, a great time for all! None of us broke...although Jerome tried his best to justify a new clutch

Congrats Larry. That 14.75 is a new 5th gen NA record. The prior best that I know of is a 14.89 by Bryan (MD2kMax)

5th gen record huh? Well, cool then!

I guess I also have spots 2 and 3 as well then as my other runs were 14.812 @ 94.94 and a 14.847 @ 94.94 (strange coincidence on the mph) as well.

I can say this though. There are a few other Maxima's right here in the Tampa area that can run the same times as me or faster. They are just lying in the weeds for now and getting some practice

I believe Mad Max has a 14.5 in him on the stock 17" rims if the conditions are right. All it will take is a sub 2.2 second 60 foot time and favorable weather.

Wonder who you are talking about! LOL Consistently ran 15.1 Sat night but I gotta learn how to launch better. All my launches were high 2.3s. Argggh. Mph was consistently mid 94s. We could compare the CAI and SI if I could drive as well as you!

May call up Spec-R and try to get dyno'd this week just to compare with your results. Should be interesting.

When you go to Spec R...let me know! Ill bring my gas powered lawn blower and we'll blow on the intake and see how much extra power it makes! Could be the next mod...The Ryobi $99 blower....Ill bet we could shoehorn it in there....

I did 18 runs to be exact!! My best time was 15 @ 95.7. I just can't get that @#$&^%launch!! That run was

R/T .93
60' 2.39
330 6.51
1/8 9.81
1/8 mph 73.35
1000 12.66
1/4 15.01
1/4 mph 95.72

It was my first run at the track and all in all I think I did alright. That high R/T was because they changed to the pro lights without saying anything so I was slow out of the box. Also, I didn't power shift because of the clutch running hot as Larry pointed out, so I know I can go below 15. Next time I'll get it.

Peace...

Wow Jerome....I didnt know you hit 95.7 mph! Thats awesome. Youve definitely got a 14.xx in there! With a trap speed like that, youve got the power to run 14.5's. The highest trap speed Ive hit is only 95.38 mph.

I cant speak for others, but I usually leave at 4000 rpm and ride the clutch out slowly. I hold the revs steady, and just ease out of it. I was able to get my best 60 foot times that way. The clutch didnt mind...no smoking or acrid smells noted Leaving at a lower rpm and/or flooring it too soon resulted in slower 60 foot times (too much wheel spin), and consequently worse ET's. But, you will typically get higher trap speeds in this way.

I shift at redline and never take my foot off the gas. But, I do use the clutch. Im not that mean to ole Mad Max. Ill bet that cramming gears (aka "speedshifting"..staying at WOT the whole way and not using the clutch) could drop some more time of the ET's, but Im not planning on trying!

Costs at the track vary, but around here its usually $15 or so on Test and Tune nights. Make sure your car doesnt have extra junk rolling around in it (no extra weight). Also, make sure to bring soem white shoe polish to write your number on the window. The track will assing this number to you and its how youre identified on the time slips.

notice that....

your trap speed will decrease as you get a better launch (lower 60') but at the same time your E.T. will drop. That's how it works. Your best E.T. will almost ALWAYS result in the lowest trap speed. When you get that crazy high MPH that means you were spinning like a bit@h!

Yep.....Ive found that to be true with any car Ive ever run. On my fastest ET run, I had "hotlapped" the car a few times though, so I was down on power a bit, which also dropped the trap speed some. But, the lower ET made the biggest difference in bringing the trap speed down.

Also, I "almost" used your launching technique! I believe you would leave at 5000 rpm and ride the clutch out. I was having decent luck at 4000 rpm. It depends on the track surface at any given time. But, one things for sure. Leaving at a low rpm and flooring it hasnt seemed to work for me!

hehe...scary launchin' so high huh?

you'd think all you'd do is spin...
but i don't find that to be the case...
with good clutch control..the sucker just hooks!
don't have to worry about that dreaded BOG either.

Yeah...no bogging at all. Im thinking a sub 2.2 short time is achievable on the stock 17's. Do you have the 16's?
