The inside brake pads get the 2 shims{Closest to wheel well}. The out side pads only get one shim. If I can recall correctly, the black shim goes over the silver shim on the inside pads. It's hard to make out what color my shims are becuase they had over 100K miles on them last time I did my pads.

the inside pad is the other way around. it's the black one then the bronze/shiney one over that..on the inside pad. outside pad only the black shim.

I agree with DanNY on this one, as the shiny metal shim is for the caliper piston to press against, while teh black shim goes directly on the pad.

However, please note that my 99 had significant noise when using the shiny metal shim and much less when using only the black shims. The caliper piston "eats" through any brake disc quiet (blue goop) that you may place on the shiny metal shim. Any front brake noise rarely occurs and is barely audible.

bill try slapping some of that blue goop of yours between the shiny shim and the black one. or adjust the shiney one so it's more snug on the pad. worst case get a new set of shims from nissan.

I did.....it didn't help.

What occurred was the layer of blue goop that I put on the OUTSIDE of the shiny metal shim was worn through by the caliper piston, producing copious amounts of noise only a few weeks after they were blue gooped.......

So I left that shim off when I took everything apart again, and all is quiet.

woah..that's odd...sounds like the spring for the pads are a little weak.
well as long as it's good now..
